Pleasantville is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Pleasantville is located on the border of Freehold Township and Neptune Township. The first settlers in Pleasantville were Hugh Morey and his family who came from Queens, New York in 1795. They founded a gristmill that operated until 1814. Morey's grandson, John Morey, ran the mill until 1868 when it became part of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad company and was sold to George Fenton who renamed it "Pleasantville". In 1898, Drury Harriman bought the mill and changed it into an Electric Power Company Gramophone record plant which remained operational until its closure in 1978. In 1916, Prentice Hall acquired a controlling interest in Electric-Power Company Gramophone and continues to operate it as a research center today known as Harriman Library (formerly Easton Technical High School). In 1923-24 Pleasantville hosted what is now called "The Open House" Exhibition of American Art which featured works by Edgar Allan Poe, James McNeill Whittier and other leading American artists of that time. During World War II there was significant construction activity taking place in nearby Saybrook during World War II due to military needs for munitions production at Saybrook Arsenal (now Fairview Park). The townspeople were able to provide essential services such as roads and utilities while their homes were being built or retrofitted for use during wartime. Pleasantville is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 and incorporated as a village in 1837. The name of the town comes from Pleasant Valley Township, one of the original townships formed under the Province of New Jersey when it was created on October 14, 1777. Pleasantville is located within Hunterdon County and is part of the Paterson–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Rahway to the north and west, Hackettstown to the east and south, and Chester to the northwest. The township boundaries were modified on November 3, 1951 by adding portions of Caldwell Township to make up for what had been lost when that township was reduced from 8 square miles (213 km2) to 3 square miles (8 km2). The first settler in Pleasantville possibly arrived about 1800 BCE according to archeological evidence found at Pleasant Valley Farmstead which dates back to before then according to historic records preserved at Princeton University’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. One theory suggests that early habitation here may have come about as a result of traders coming into this area looking for natural resources such as wood or stone while others speculate that people may have moved here because they discovered rich coal seams near where they lived today. Evidence also indicates that there were Native Americans living around this area prior to Europeans showing up so any connections between these groups are unknown but it seems likely that some type of interaction took place given how close these areas came together later on when European settlers started moving into this area specifically looking for coal seams! In 1814 Pleasantville became an official municipality under state charter #3-1 with George Washington Squires appointed its first Mayor with Reverend James Witherspoon serving as Clerk/Treasurer/ street commissioner etc.. From then until 1840 “the Village [Pleasantville] flourished rapidly” due mainly “to its excellent location – just outside Trenton – whence goods could be easily transported across county lines” according to historian Joseph Ahern who wrote about Pleasant Valley during this time period noting how much trade occurred here especially during World War I since many companies worked outposts along both sides of Lake Monmouth! This success continued through several confrontations with other villages situated near Trenton such as Northumberland which continuously tried to block trade opportunities through purchases from farmers living in those villages while also accusing merchants in their midst of unfair pricing practices; however nothing ever came forward definitive enough warranting punitive measures being taken against either village though it did manage To cause some real inconvenience for years afterwards! This showstopper event happened on March 15th 1830 when Garrison Gristmill caught fireraising over objections from local farmers resulting in heavy damage done not only inside but also outside including substantial loss of property valued at $5200+ making it one Of THE most damaging fires ever reported In America up until then! Prioritizing public safety Over economic development must seem like pretty bad business practice back then didn’t it? haha But whatever… even if these actions did lead directly TO increased crime rates And increased social unrest considered necessary pre-Union times sorta counts as progress right? ;-) Anyway back onto topic; after all these years later things finally started getting better for Pleasantvillites following annexation by Newark Liberty International Airport & subsequent growth which saw an increase in jobs brought about by new employers who needed more space so buildings began popping up all around town soon becoming more suburban than rural although still maintainable somehow 🙂 Some might say that annexing another municipality offers no benefit whatsoever other than taking away some potential competition but I would disagree saying instead annexed municipalities provide stability once again meaning less chance something will happen disrupting what little peace & harmony we currently enjoy 😉 Although over time annexations do tend towards creating more division among communities rather than closer ties so sorry neighbors 😉 Onward we go: With all modern amenities now available within minutes walkable distance (& sometimes much further depending upon weather) Pleasantville has become increasingly competitive with surrounding municipalities vying for business & tax revenues particularly considering our small size comparatively speaking earning us an often undeserved reputation For Being A "Small Town That Can't Keep Up With The Big Cities" although admittedly not always without its share Of controversies ;) We definitely try hard not To let those negative perceptions hold us back tho 🙂still tryingTo play fair though 😊
