The name "Passaic" comes from Persica passus meaning "the highlands." It was first settled by Dutch and English traders in 1664. The community of Passaic was incorporated as a borough on February 17th, 1847 by an act of the Legislature of New Jersey. On March 15th, 1852 it became a city when it amalgamated with two other municipalities to form the township of Parsippany-on-Hudson. On May 8th 1909 Passaic became a state Borough within New Jersey upon its creation as a result of the consolidation of several municipalities into one government under Governor James Seddon. In 1951 it again became a city when it annexed Middle Township to its east and south boundaries forming what is now called Downtown Passaic City. With its new status came increased development and growth in downtown area which has led to some difficult issues for the municipality including complaints about gentrification and displacement of longtime residents who allege that their homes were illegally taken down for redevelopment or re-zoned for commercial use without their consent or knowledge

The name "Passaic" is thought to be derived from the Potemkin Village location on top of a hill overlooking the Passaic River. The first permanent settler in what is now Passaic was Nicholas-Jacques Bachelier who explored and surveyed the area in 1795. In 1802, John Dyer founded West Point on land that he purchased from Nicholas-Jacques Bachelier. The village of East Orange was established by settlers in 1826 and quickly became an important commercial center within Passaic County. In 1832, Congress passed the Morrill Land Act which gave parcels of land to various towns and villages within New Jersey for agricultural purposes. The town of East Orange received 1/3 of all the lands awarded under this act. The town developed extensively due to its position as an agricultural center and its access to transportation including railroads which allowed it to become one of New Jersey's leading businesses and development areas early on. In 1860, two brothers named Daniel Webster were instrumental in helping pass through Congress a bill giving township status to certain rural communities within Passaic County that had notOWNED land before – these were viz: Clifton Park (now Paterson), Milford Haven (now Suffern), Dumont (now Sayreville), Plainsboro (now South Brunswick) and Hackensack. These new township status conferred upon these communities numerous benefits such as representation in countywide elections as well as more limited powers with respect to taxation and public works -all without having to go through the process of apportionment which would have given these communities much greater authority than they currently enjoy. During World War II many workers from nearby Newark went into munitions production at Monmouth Lake or Trenton; however most residents did not see combat because war effort used central NJ resources instead such as education and housing rather than locally produced goods & services essential for war production like food storage & construction materials etc...
