Oakland, New Jersey is the most populous city in Bergen County and the third-largest city on Long Island. The population of Oakland was 317,814 as of the 2010 Census. As of 2016, the estimated population for Oakland was 388,510. The first European settlers in what is now Oakland were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1624. They named their new settlement Nieuw Amsterdam after a small town in Holland that they had visited. In 1638, English colonists founded Newark on an island in Lake Hackensack and renamed it Nottingham because of its distance from London. The name OakLAND soon became popular among these English settlers because it referred to an area of forest land that lay between Newark and Jersey City on the east side of Lake Hackensack. In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, British forces burned down part of Newark while conducting raids into New York State. This destroyed much of what later became known as “Oakland” – including some homes built by English settlers – but did notables such as Captain George Washingtonstill retain ownership and use of their home until afterNJ passed a law prohibiting public combustion by 1783. In 1821 when Bayonne was created from parts of Passaic and Middlesex counties, Oakland became a part of Bayonne Township with a population numbering just under 1,000 residents. For many years it functioned as one small town peripheral to larger Bayonne Village which stretched along Broadway northward from NJ Route 2 (now called Garden State Parkway). In 1892 when Bayonne Township formed into a Borough status within Hudson County following approval by voters at an election held that year; Oakland became borough president with John Purdy serving as chairman; afterwards Borough Council meetings took place at various locations within or near present-day Downtown Brooklyn Heights until 1898 when Borough President Purdy resigned to become Mayoralty candidate for Brooklyn Heights (and lost). During World War I local citizens raised money to buy war supplies and send them directly to Soldiers' Home at Camp Upton in upstate New York where troops were being trained before deployment overseas On October 15th 1918 local residents gathered around E Clarkson's piano located on North Seventh Street corner Park Avenue for "a dance given by Mrs Clarkson". There are conflicting accounts about whether this event actually happened or if it was simply published social history trivia circa 1920s
