Hawthorne is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hawthorne was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Hawthorne and his wife Hannah Greenbush. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1834, Hawthorne became the seat of Middlesex County after it was created from portions of Essex and Sussex counties. In 1868, Hawthorne had its own railroad station and began to grow as a community with shops and businesses catering to travelers on the southbound NJ Transit line coming through town. In 1924, Hawthorne merged with neighboring township of Middletown to form a new municipality which still remains separate today. The original homes that were built in Hawthorne date back to early 1800s when landowner John Kapp purchased some woodland near what is now Main Street for $1 per acre (the equivalent of $ in ). He named his house "New England". Some residents still maintain ownership of their dwellings which they live in while others have moved into newer homes throughout time. The first Post Office opened in 1802 and closed around 1830 due to lack of customers or an epidemic that swept across America at that time; however there are several references to a “General Store” being open until about 1840 located on what is now State Route 7 (now US Route 202). Thereafter general stores were established at various points along this road including one on Fourth Street NW which later closed down due to fire Dec 5th 1854. One such store known as “Nathaniel’s General Store” on Third Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets NW operated from about 1830 until about 1865 when it burned down due weather conditions during British occupation era although records show Nathaniel had been operating since about 1797 according to local history books published at the turnofthe century! After Nathaniel’s store burned down some locals decided that they would build their own store but failed because no money could be raised so they reopened under new management Oct 3rd 1870 located just north side Third Avenue between Broad and Market StreetsNW called Pemberton & Company operating until 1895 when it also caught fire! After Pemberton & Company closed operations another store opened Nov 25th 1897 by Henery Howe who ran it until 1901 when he too died suddenly leaving his business unprofitably active! A third store opened Apr 27th 1911 by Simeon Litchfield operated until shortly before its closure Feb 1916 following a fire!! Another store operated from 1951 thru 1957 called Stevens National Bank operation continued until 1965 when it too closed due mostly to lack of customers! Finally another store opened May 2nd 1967 by Maurice Kapp operated until 1971!!!!! These three stores are all listed as current day businesses within N/Y Township limits!!! Although not all buildings/stations from those times remain extant these provide insight into life & times in this small community during its early years!!!

Hawthorne is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Hawthorne is part of the Paterson– Passaic– Camden Junction micropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Hawthorne were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They named their land "Haarlem" after Haarlem, Netherlands, where they had been living for some time. English colonists arrived a few years later and named their land "Hawthorne". In 1837, Jameson & Gillett completed the Delaware and Raritan Railroad from Newark to Sayreville and begandistributing goods and passengers between those two towns. This made Hawthorne an important transportation center for the region. In 1882, Wm. Fenton built a sawmill on the west side of Center Road which became one of the largest mills in New Jersey until it closed its doors in 1974. The first post office was established at Hawthorn on October 10, 1837 by Hiram Willard with Jno. Crouse as his assistant; it was renamed Bloomfield on November 1st (). The first store opened at 313 Centre Road (now Route 9) on December 3rd (). According to local historian Edward Sanger: "When [the] Post Office Department selected Bloomfield as its site for a new post office...it took into consideration that little more than two miles east of this junction lay South Hackensack", which would become one of Hoboken's most important commercial streets during the 19th century due to its close proximity to major railroads and other businesses located thereabouts." Hawthorne remained an agricultural community until about World War II when manufacturing began to take over as mainstay of local economy; however agriculture still makes up a large percentage of population today due to growing suburbanization around town limits since late-20th century industrial development has shifted most jobs outside town boundaries towards larger metropolitan areas such as Paterson or Union City NJ., while much smaller portions continue to rely heavily on agriculture for economic sustenance
Hawthorne is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,500 at the 2010 census. Hawthorne was founded by John Hawthorne on March 12, 1795 as part of the Bloomingdale Township. The name derived from the old English word "haugh" meaning wooded area and "dale" meaning valley or field. On October 10, 1814, Hawthorne was incorporated as a borough. The first post office in Hawthorne opened in 1824 and was called Bloomfield Avenue. It closed in 1829 due to low mail traffic and reopened under the name of Hawthorne Avenue on December 1st with David Fenton as the first postmaster. In 1846, the town became part of Monmouth County when it was formed from parts of Bloomingdale Township and Ocean Township. A schoolhouse was built in 1897 and replaced in 1903 with a new one that still stands today. A fire destroyed most of the town center on January 24, 1916 which caused extensive damage to businesses and residences including the building that still stands today which housed both schools until 1951. The current library building replaced it in 1951 after being damaged by a tornado two years earlier
