Franklin Lakes is a small town in New Jersey, located on the border of Union and Morris counties. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paterson-New Brunswick-Middlesex metropolitan area. The name "Franklin Lakes" comes from General George Washington's home at Mount Vernon in Virginia, where he spent his summers during his lifetime. The first settler in Franklin Lakes was David Franks who purchased land east of what is now the town line on October 15, 1814. In 1840, John Witherspoon became one of the first farmers to plat a farm in what is now Franklin Lakes Township. He named it after George Washington and its location today bears this out as Witherspoon Road runs through the heart of the town. In 1855, Henry Kapp bought 640 acres (248ha) southeast of present day Franklin Lakes for $1,000USD from William Richardson who had built Fort Monmouth on that property many years earlier. This purchase marked the beginning of Kapp's long relationship with Franklin Lakes and its development as a farming community due to his holdings within minutes' driving distance from most residents today! In 1912, when Morris County was created from parts of Essex County, Franklin Lakes became part of that county and until recently there wasn't an official postal ZIP code for it! However, with suburbanization ongoing throughout much of New Jersey these days there are likely few people living within commuting range still using 11111 as their postal code!
The Franklin Lakes were named for General James Franklin, who led the American Revolution. The area was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The Dutch bought land in what is now New Jersey in 1664, and began to build a barrier island to protect their property from English attack. In 1776, the British landed on Long Island and attacked, driving the Dutch out of their territory. The British also took over much of New Netherland, including the Franklin Lakes.
