Military gift history in Clifton, New Jersey goes back to the Revolutionary War. The town of Clifton was named for Colonel James Wilkinson who fought in that war. Colonel Wilkinson and his men donated land to the town in order to build a courthouse and military barracks. In 1795, Major General James Clinton founded the first school in Clifton. That same year, he also donated a cannon to the town as a symbol of peace. In 1814, Brigadier General Peter Cooper purchased land from Colonel Wilkinson for $2,500. He used that land to build Fort Clinton which served as an artillery post during the war. In 1815, Brigadier General John Moore erected a battery on the fortifications which became known as Moore’s Battery. That same year, Captain George Washington returned from battles at Saratoga and brought with him a large number of cannons and pistols for use by soldiers inClifton and surrounding areas. From 1800-1810, there were only six civilian residents living inClifton while military personnel lived aboardFortClintonand Fort Delawarewhichwerebothimportantformilitary purposesduringthewar.(1) Between 1810-1820., however, there were twenty-one civilians livinginClifton while thirty-six military personnel lived onFortClinton.(2) During this time period, Clifton became one of America’s most important army installations due to its strategic location at the center of New Jersey along Route 9A.(3) After America’s victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Field on October 19th ,1821,,Cliftonspecial importancewasbroughttothetownbyMajorGeneralGeorgeWashingtonwhostayed intothetowntillheendofDecember.(4)DuringthattimeperiodinthedowntownsectionofCliftontookonanincreasedroleasthespaceForcommerceandartisanalwork.(5)AfterWashingtonleftthetown,,newspapersstarted publishing articles about how much better off things had become since he left.(6) This increased attention paidtoCliftonturnedabout seventypercentofthetotalpopulationfromeighteenhundredthousandtowardforty thousandin2000(7)) Today’smilitary Gift History Museum preserves these old guns and memorabilia from throughout our community's past by displaying it here together with other artifacts from our local history

Clifton, NJ is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. Clifton is located on the border of Mercer and Essex Counties. Clifton has a long history dating back to 1814 when it was part of the township of Easton which was established by order of General George Washington as part of Clinton Township. The name Clifton originates from Sir John Cliffe who purchased land in what is now Clifton from Colonel Robert Morris in 1792. In 1814, the township was divided into two portions; one being annexed by Mercer County and the other remaining within Easton Township. The first settler in what is now Clifton arrived in 1814 and named it for his hometown, England - Fulham Long Acre (later renamed Horseshoe Pond). This early settler had come overland from London on horseback and wagon. He built a cabin near present-day Third Street and village Road during this time period. After building his cabin and some others around this time, he began to grow crops andraise sheep on his property which he later sold to Captain Elias Boudinot who also founded nearby Princeton University. Captain Elias Boudinot's wife Mary moved to Clifton with him after they married in 1800; she continued to live there until her death in 1832; thereafter, children were raised by their mother or grandmother until they reached majority age and then returned home again. It wasn't until 1865 that school began operations at what is now First Presbyterian Church - becoming the first public school west of Philadelphia open to boys in Mercer County since 1795! In 1912, cloverleaf High School opened its doors with grades 9-12 after serving as an academy for girls for several years preceding that date; today it continues as part of Montclair Academy Charter Schools! In 1916 Westcliff Amusement Park became operational following a gift from Mrs Virginia Atherston; it remains one of only two amusement park attractions still operating statewide (the other being Six Flags Great Adventure!). Prior thereto, amusement park rides had been available at various locations throughout central New Jersey including Asbury Park (then known as Biographie Gardens) where admission cost $1 per person per day! It wasn't until 1951 that Route 22 became Mother Road leading through Clifton into Essex County becoming one of America's first interstate highways! In 1956 local businesses gave birth to "The Dairy Queen" - opening their doors 1½ hours before closing time daily across all six counties adjacent toCLIFTON!!! In 1960/61 CLIFTON NATIONALS took place with more than 20 teams competing against each other lawnballing & basket balling outdoors on beautiful Main Street between 5th & 6th Streets - achieving an attendance record high OF 131 PERSONS ON ONE DAY!!! Today our very own GOLF COURSE begins its journey down Main Street starting just east of 5th street opposite "The Dairy Queen" --- making CLIFTON THE CITIES FIRST COUNTY TO HAVE A GOLF COURSE IN THEIRTownship !

The battle was fought between Confederate forces and Union forces and resulted in a significant victory for the Union side. It is also worth noting that Clifton was one of the few towns to remain loyal to the Confederacy during the war. This Loyalty can be traced back to when Clifton's founder, William Cranch, helped lead a unit of rebels against General Robert E. Lee after he had captured Richmond. subsequent battles at Appomattox Court House and Petersburg demonstrated that Clifton would not easily desert its cause. Another important event fromClifton's history is the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. This Declaration set out principles for independence from Great Britain and it played an important role in helping to create America as we know it today. Additionally, throughout its history, Clifton has been home to many famous individuals including George Washington who was born here and John Adams who resided here for some time before becoming president of Massachusetts.
Clifton was originally a small settlement on the Delaware River in Mercer County, New Jersey. It grew up around two small mills that operated from the early 17th century until 1810. The first mill was built by John Clifton in 1698. The second mill was built by Peter Clifton in 1701. The mills were destroyed by fire in 1810, but their spirit continued to live on through other businesses and organizations until the late 19th century. The town of Clifton was incorporated as a village on April 12, 1847, from portions of Newark and Bound Brook townships. On July 1, 1888, it became a borough with a population of 6,500 residents. On October 15, 1924, it became an independent city with a population of 24,000 residents.
