The history of the Bridgeton Army National Guard begins with the creation of the regiment on November 3, 1887. The unit was originally organized as a cavalry regiment, and during World War I it served in France and Belgium. It was redesignated as an infantry regiment on December 9, 1917, and again on October 1, 1922. On July 1, 1942, the branch became an air defense brigade effective September 15th. The brigade was transferred to Fort Monmouth County in New Jersey on December 20th of that year and activated there on January 5th 1943 under command of Lieutenant Colonel JUAN FERNANDEZ who had also been commander of the 6th Infantry Division at El Paso Heights AFB Texas since fall 1942. Bridgeton is an unincorporated community located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Delaware River on the border of Middlesex and Sussex counties. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bridgeton were Dutch traders in 1624. In 1701, a group of English colonists arrived from Delaware and named it after their home town of Broadstairs in Kent England. In 1783, when British General John Armstrong took control of New Jersey from the Dutch as part of their efforts to gain control over North America, he renamed Bridgeton after his old home town in Kent England. Bridgeton was incorporated as a township on April 15, 1814 by William Tilden and James Haddon. On October 11, 1825 it became a borough based on its own charter granted by the New Jersey Legislature; however, Borough status was revoked on March 3, 1828 because of lack of support from residents. On June 10th 1830 Bridgeton obtained full cityhood under the name "Bridgeton Township," with James Haddon as mayor and James Gadsden as Deputy Mayor. On July 1st 1840 The City Council repealed Borough Status effective immediately upon passage by both chambers (Senate 28-2) – effectively making this one large city with no boroughs remaining within its boundaries! In 1907 there were only 350 people living in Bridgeton proper while 1 thousand people lived in surrounding areas including Hackensack and Paterson which had all become boroughs since 1898! The population has grown steadily since then reaching 2,500 households today (2006). One factor that has helped contribute to this growth is increased access to education including A&M University & Rutgers-Newark which are located just across the river fromBridgeton creek where many students live & work; also new housing developments such as Eden Gardens Shopping Center have brought more people into town during recent years giving it an even greater sense of community feeling

The name of the town is derived from British General Bridgeton who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The first European to visit what is now Bridgeton was Giovanni Domenico Giraldi on July 29, 1714. He named it for his friend and compatriot Lady BridgetONe who had accompanied him on his journey across America. A post office called "Bridgeton" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1955. During World War II many Americans lived in Bridgeton due to its strategic location as an important military base within easy reach of both London and Washington National Airport. After the war ended many people chose to move away from wartime amenities such as large supermarkets and schools that were built during the war years with little consideration for future needs. In 1957 a company called Continental Airlines began service to Newark Liberty International Airport from Bridgeton making it one of NJ's earliest airports with jet travel services Today, much of what once made up downtown Bridgeton has been replaced by new homes or businesses; few remaining traces remain of past residents or businesses that operated here during wartime times. However, there are several historical markers throughout town which may assist visitors in learning more about this time period including: - Monument to American Soldiers Killed In Action (1939-1945) located at exit 9 off I-287 near interchange 10A - Local History Museum located on High Street between Washington Avenue and Summit Avenue - The remains of Fort Monmouth (1807), a former arsenal now used as an open field museum
