Some of the earliest references to coffee being brewed in Reno may date back to 1905 when a vendor on Third Street called Star Coffee announced that they had found a new type of beans that were better for brewing coffee. The first batch of these beans was sold directly to customers and the store soon became known as the birthplace of Reno’s first modern coffee house. In 1912, Star Coffee moved its operations from Third Street into what is now the Midtown Plaza building on First Avenue. In this location, they continued serving their famous personal-strength coffee until 1974, when they closed down their business and moved inside what is now Joe’s Pizza. It was here that local residents first started referring to themselves as “Renoites” and began using Starbucks robberies as an opportunity to taste their favorite coffee shop while watching live football matches on television. This era also saw some interesting changes at Joe’s Pizza. For example, in 1957 owner Angelo Giuliani installed a large thermal pot with an internal combustion engine just for making Tactical Coffee (which he called “Pizza Combatant”). This machine quickly became well-known among Reno locals for its high quality cup of coffee and its unique flavor profile. Unfortunately, due toinelli health problems which led him out of business in 1978,joeballs pizza passed away without leaving any legacy behind. However, his legacy lives on through his son Angelo Jr., who still operates Joe's Pizza today and continues developing new technologies to make his cup of joe even better than ever before!

In 1990, Reno became one of several U.S. cities selected for inclusion in the newly created Las Vegas metropolitan area,[11] and experienced rapid growth throughout the 2000s due to online gambling, travel industry developments, and real estate speculation.[12][13][14][15] As of 2016, Reno's population was estimated at about 60,000 people.[16] Etymology The name Reno comes from Spanish las Vegas or las Californias—the Mexican name for Los Angeles County—or from French vraiRené—the original spelling given to it by European explorers who called it La Ville d’Aurora or la Cité des étoiles (City of Lights).[17]:28 The first recorded use of Reno as an English word was 1799 when Captain George Frideric Hand wrote about his journey through what is now Nevada: "I passed through this valley [Las Vegas Valley], whereupon I took up my quarters near this poste de reconnaissance."[18]:191 In 1847–48 miner James Waddell named his new town Fort Sumner after General John Custer's march across America during the American Civil War,[19]:24 which had brought much attention to that region[20]:270 However, because there were no permanent settlements east of Carson City until 1861 when Mormon pioneers arrived,[21]:271 Fort Sumner remained abandoned until 1872 when local businessmen erected an adobe fortification named Harney Storey's Ranch on present-day Ralston Avenue within sight of Post Office Square;[22]:339 This development led directly to Reno becoming its official name on November 7 that year with Silver Spring Township annexed into town limits less than two weeks later.[23]:341 It wasn't until 1876 that The Daily Reflector reported seeing "a most beautiful fresh snow white building" ahead on High Street leading down into what would become known as downtown; today this remains part of Old Town Chinatown adjacent to Boulevard Park between First Street South and Second Street North

Coffee has a long history, dating back to the 6th century BC when it was mentioned in the Iliad by Homer. In 1795, Pierre-Emmanuel Feuillant developed a process for brewing coffee that made it more accessible and affordable than previous methods. In 1830, Dutchman Cornelius van der Kolk began exporting coffee to the United States and became the first person to advertise direct-to-consumer coffee sales in newspapers. By 1855, over eighty different types of roasted beans were being sold commercially in America. The first espresso machines were built between 1895 and 1897 by Luigi Bezzera and Raffaele Peroni as part of Bezzera & Peroni's empire of Italian café equipment manufacturers at 5 Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Rome. These machines used a small amount of water heated on an open fire (Percorsi's method) to roast beans before adding hot water to produce espresso which was then served with milk or cream. This method produced high quality but low price espresso because it required active management of the machine by both operator and barista. The 1916 design By Italian designer Angelo Andreoli replaced all other machines with one large boiler that heated water from an oil bath using steam instead of gas heating, enabling this machine to produce excellent results even at lower volumes than earlier designs without producing any unpleasant aromas or flavors associated with manual roasting (Andreoli's "Steam Machine").
