The Coast Guard was founded in 1915 as the Nevada state police. The first coast guard station in Las Vegas was built on Fremont Street and it served until 1951. In 1978, the first helicopter hangar was built at the Lucky Strike Casino and it served as the Coast Guard helicopter hangar until 1984. In 1988, a new Coast Guard station was opened at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino which became operational in 1990. Since then, the squadron has grown to 10CG members with two helicopters each. The unit also operates three boats- an iceboat, a speedboat and aYSV- for search and rescue missions. The Coyote Squadron's primary mission is to provide security along the Las Vegas Strip while providing support for other law enforcement agencies during events such as concerts or conventions. Additionally, they are responsible for Ice Rescue operations when hazardous Situation arise on or around the Strip; these include accidents involving vessels or people operating within watercraft while ashore (such as swimming), stranded motorists who have stopped on property under criminal jurisdiction (for example DUI Arrests) or when lifeguards have been called out to save swimmer from drowning while fishing off shore
