Scottsbluff is a town in Scotts County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 937 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kearney, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Scottsbluff was established on February 14, 1868. The present town was laid out by Jno. C. Scott and erected on the site of what is now the old schoolhouse and garage No. 2 (now occupied by the community center). The first store in town was built by Wm Halsey and opened in 1869. The railroad arrived in 1870 and quickly became an important factor in Scottsbluff's growth; it served as a main artery for transportation between Omaha and Des Moines, Iowa until its purchase by Union Pacific Railroad in 1925. In addition to its agricultural importance, the railroad also formed a key link with nearby Kearney; goods transported from Scottsbluff to Omaha were frequently unloaded at Kearney Terminal before being pushed eastward into Nebraska through Rush Lake along the Union Pacific line to marketplaces like Sioux City, Iowa or Reno, Nevada. In 1912 residents of Scotts Bluff petitioned Congress for annexation into Lincoln County; this request was granted two years later when Lincoln County was created from all but one of Scott's original counties following their merger with Douglas County. By 1920 Scottsville had grown up around downtown Scottsville while other small towns continued to decline within sight of it- only one remaining community - White Sands - still saw significant growth after World War II ended hostilities there and local industry dried up due to competition from automobiles and other technological advances throughout much of North America

Scottsbluff, Nebraska is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Nebraska. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kearney County and was founded in 1868 by settlers from Illinois and Iowa. The name Scottsbluff is derived from a Sioux word meaning "place where horses grazed." The first settler to arrive in what is now Scottsbluff was John Prentice in 1868. He named his new land Scottsville after his home country Scotland. In 1870, George Armstrong Custer died while on an expedition through central Nebraska and his death touched off a controversy over who should take up his place as Governor of Nebraska Territory following his death at the Battle of Washita River on July 24, 1876. In 1880, Territorial governor Amos Kendall issued a proclamation naming Scottsville "the capital" of Kearney County because it had been the site of many important events in its history including the battle for Kearney Valley against Native Americans and settlement by white people. The city's growth continued until World War I when it lost much of its population due to military enlistments and post-war resettlement efforts across America. During World War II, Scottsville experienced some significant activity as Eighth Air Force Base was built there (later known as Scott Air Force Base). However, most activity took place at nearby Omaha Naval Air Station which remained active into the 1990s when that facility closed down due to budget cuts within Pentagon DoD acute budget crisis years 1986-1988 era United States Department Of Defense annual report cited then general manager Lieutenant General Bruce Kestrel declaration that no longer could support current unit operations with present missionStatement).
