The store continued to grow and prosper until it was sold to the Hutton family in 1925. From then on, the store operated under the name of Hutton's Greeting Store. In 1935, the store changed its name again to Brougham's Greeting Store and became a department store. It was through this business venture that John W. Brougham met his future wife, Clara Maud Hutton. Together, they founded what would become one ofScottsbluff's most successful businesses: the Broughams grocery chain. Today, the Broughams grocery chain is one of Scottsbluff's most popular businesses and continues to thrive thanks to its wide variety of products and services. Scottsbluff is a small town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Scottsbluff was John Garratt in 1868. The town began to form around this time and was named for General Scott who had fought in the American Civil War. Scottsbluff was founded on October 15, 1872 by James Seddon and his family with $4 from Wm. Higginson. On November 9, 1875, the first school opened in Scottsbluff with 10 students and an instructor named Mr. Comstock teaching math and English Literature from a rented room above the store on Main Street. A second school followed on December 1st with 20 students and an instructor named Prentice teaching arithmetic and surveying from a rented room across the street from the post office on Third Street). In 1876-77 there were also two elections to Town Council which resulted in three members being elected: Jno. Seddon (1st term), Geo Fenton (2nd term) & Geo Widdoes (3rd term). Civic buildings were built including a library building erected in 1886 by Mr. Comstock & Mrs Roberta Ladd which served as the nucleus of what is now known as "OldScottsBlUFF" park today located just east of downtown Scottsbluff on State Highway 622 In 1895 local rancher George Armstrong donated land off OldScotsBlUFF Boulevard for use as a public school district site northwest of downtown Scottsbluffer Scottsbluffs high school opened its doors for grades 7-12 on September 8th, 1907 under instruction of Everett Davenport On January 14, 1911 concurrent classes commenced for 5th thru 12thGrade students at Central High School following approval by then Superintendent Drury Wright The original building that stands today along Old Scots BlUFF Boulevard between Third Street & Main Avenue housed 3 classrooms/lofts/a gymnasium/the guidance counselor’s office/the auditorium while later additions included new classrooms/lofts added to rear addition #1in 1963-1964 along with another multipurpose hall attached to rear addition #3 circa 1971-. Today's Administration Building also contains 4 classrooms/ offices plus 2 multi purpose rooms used as conference rooms or teacher lounges during special events or classes like band or choir rehearsal etc historicity not well documented but believed to have been constructed c1930's

It grew rapidly as an agricultural center and cattle market town until the Great Depression destroyed much of its businesses and residents. In the 1970s and 1980s, Scottsbluff increased its population to around 10,000 due to development along Interstate 80 and other new subdivisions in nearby Lincoln and Douglas Counties. However, during the 2000 Census it declined back below 1000 again due to loss of jobs in related industries such as education and health care services. Despite this decline over time, Scottsbluff still remains one of the most economically active communities in central Nebraska because of its strengths in agriculture and tourism.
