The United States Air Force (USAF) has a rich history in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The USAF was founded on Feb. 14, 1947 as the U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). In 1957, the USAF merged with the United States Army to form the United States Air Forces in Japan (USAFJ). The USAF located its first Headquarters and Headquarters components at Scott AFB, Illinois in 1959 and activated combat units at Gainesville AFB, Florida in 1961. From 1961-1963, the USAF operated from three bases: Malmstrom AFB, Montana; Offutt AFB, Nebraska; and Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona. By 1966-1967 all active duty squadrons were stationed at one base or another within 10 miles of each other on six continents! In 1966, USAF General Curtis LeMay ordered all military branches to develop strategic nuclear weapons. As a result, many civilian agencies were also introduced into the nuclear missile program: NASA became part of Strategic Services Division (SSD), acquiring ballistic missiles; and DARPA became responsible for developing guidance systems and other technologies for nuclear-armed missiles. Scottsbluff, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Fremont, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Scottsbluff post office was established on July 4, 1868. The community took its name from General George Scott who fought in the Mexican–American War and won fame as an officer of the Union Army's 3rd Brigade under Ulysses S. Grant. A small school was built in 1870 and became a high school in 1907. Scottsbluff was platted on April 6, 1871 by Jno. Winton and named for General Scott; it had been proposed to name it "Neenah," but local sentiment favored the new name for Scottsbluff which honored General Scott's birthplace and home state of Kansas where he grew up before moving to Dodge City to fight with Grant during the American Civil War. In 1909, when Nebraska became a state, Scottsbluff became one of its original townships within Kearney County; it has since been annexed by other towns within Kearney County including Omaha proper andCouncil Bluffs township (neighborhood now known as East Side). In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt made his final visit to America while living at Oyster Bay on Long Island after being elected Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President that year; he spent two nights at Scottsbliff before travelling south through Iowa into Texas where he delivered a speech calling for passage of the National Banking Act which would create national banks throughout America similar to those existing in Europe however no such legislation passed due to partisan obstructionism typical of that era among both Houses of Congress under then Speaker Andrew Johnson who controlled Washington D.C.)
