North Platte, Nebraska is a town in Kearny County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kearny County. North Platte is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Hearst, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become north-central Nebraska was Jacob Oberholtzer in 1854. He and his brother built a log cabin on the east fork of Big Sioux River. By 1880 there were over 50 people living in North Platte Township. The railroads arrived in the area during the 1870s and by 1907 North Platte had a full complement of railroad tracks with an average daily traffic of 1,000 passengers. The Great Northern Railway built a line to Kearney from Omaha via North Platte in 1911 and this stimulated growth within the community which reached its peak around 1915 when there were over 100 businesses operating along both railsides alone! A fire destroyed most of downtown (nownorthwest cornerofthe square) on July 5th 1906 following a lightning strike! A few weeks later General Electric erected their first power station west of Omaha for powering their plants located along eastern edgeof townline
