Fresh roasted coffee is a centuries-old tradition in Nebraska. The first record of coffee being roasted on the state's soil was in 1868, when a Dutchman named Cornelius Heywood brought some beans back from his trip to America. From then until 1903, the only place to purchase fresh roast coffee was at the State Fairgrounds in Omaha. In 1903, an American company founded by two businessmen named Harry and John Arnold began selling coffee direct from their farm near Grand Island. This system allowed for much better quality control than the old fairgrounds system and helped make fresh roast coffee one of Nebraska's most popular exports. TheArnolds continued to sell their beans directly until 1984, when they merged with another American company and became known as Peet's Coffee Company. Today, there are several different roasting companies that offer fresh roasted coffee throughout Nebraska. Some of these companies include: Hartzell Coffee, Arden Coffee Cooperative, Blue Bottle Coffee Company, Caffe Nero Italiano & Cafe Brasile - all located in or around Omaha. Grand Island, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 6,382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler on Grand Island was James Armstrong in 1855. A post office was established here in 1861 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1980. In 1865, Grand Island was the site of one of the largest land acquisitions ever made by the United States government: $1 million for 478 square miles (1,020 km²) of land near Omaha. This purchase included most of what is today north-central Nebraska and parts of Iowa and South Dakota. The area now includes most of Kearney County as well as parts of Douglas and Fremont counties in south-central Nebraska. Industry on Grand Island began with cattleraising and later grew to include manufacturing such as wagonmaking and shoeing materials for Western Union Telegraph Company employees out West. However, during World War II much local production went into munitions production for the war effort; this led to a decline in industry after 1945 when competition from abroad made producibility an issue agains

A post office was established here in 1857 and continued to be run until it was discontinued in 1908. The first store on Grand Island was a general store operated by John Wilkinson. It opened in 1858 and served as the center of town for many years. In 1892, a school house and then a garage were added to the structure that housed the white school district which began serving students from Grange School District No. 2 when it moved into its present location across Main Street from the old store in 1912. The first electric lights were installed here in 1916 by Japheth Freeman who also wired up all of central Nebraska for electricity becauseHe thought electric Lighting would make life easier for farmers and other residents who didn’t have access to natural light sources like fireplaces or window boxes In 1936, Herbert Hoover became President of America and decided to spend some time traveling around his country giving speeches at various locations including Topeka, Kansas; Des Moines, Iowa; Wichita Falls, Texas; Norman, Oklahoma; Reno Nevada On July 4th 1937 America celebrated their Independence with an outdoor barbecue hosted by local officials at Summit Lake where over 50 people attended including Presidents Roosevelt and Truman It wasn’t until 1971 that Interstate 80 replaced US Highway 20 as Grand Island’s main street connecting downtown with Highway 169 both eastbound and westbound
The first Europeans to visit what is now Nebraska were French traders in the late 17th century. The area was discovered by Spanish explorers in 1536, and exploration resumed in 1803 when American president James K. Polk sent a party of Americans to explore the Great Lakes region. In1808, the United States purchased land east of the Missouri River from France for $10 million as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The following year, John C. Fremont explored and mapped much of central California before he founded Stockton, California on September 10, 1837. On February 14, 1859, Nebraska Territory was organized from portions of California and Nevada Territory. On July 4, 1861, Nebraska became a state when it was included within the Union during the American Civil War.
