When Beatrice, Nebraska was founded in 1881, the town had one blacksmith and one gunsmith. The only other weapon in the community was a single shotgun. In 1906, a new blacksmith opened up shop in Beatrice and soon began to build rifles and shotguns. By 1945, Beatrice boasted two blacksmiths and four rifle shops. Today, there are six blacksmiths operating within the town limits; three of which are firearm dealers. All of these businesses sell firearms including handguns, shotguns, rifles, pistols and even airguns. In 1916, Beatrice became one of only two towns in Nebraska to be made an incorporated city with its own police department and fire department. In the 1930s, oil exploration began in what is now Nebraska and as a result, many businesses moved into town from out of state looking for work during that period of change in America. In 1909, Beatrice became an incorporated city and in 1912 it annexed the neighboring community of North Platte.
