In 1865, Mormons arrived to establish a Mormon colony on the Snake River near present-day Helena. In 1876, when General George Armstrong Custer led his forces into Indian Territory during the Dakota Sioux War and was captured, Missoula became one of several towns along the Missouri River offered as prisoner-of-war camps by President Ulysses S. Grant. When General Custer's death was announced at Fort Abraham Lincoln on July 5, 1887 (the day after he was shot by Sitting Bull), many residents of Missoula took to the streets to demand their general's release because they did not believe that he could have died accidentally while under army fire. On July 10th Congress passed an act freeing all Union soldiers who had been held prisoner since 1863 without trial or execution - including General Custer - but no law changed General Armstrong's status as a POW until 1926 when Congress passed another act making him eligible for parole if he survived five years outside of America without being accused of any crime again
