The couple started out roasting their own beans and selling espresso drinks. In 1992, they opened a store called the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and began to sell whole bean coffee as well. In 2006, they became the first business to open in downtown Helena with a cafe called The Coffee House. The first white person to live in Helena was Jens Christensen, who arrived in 1873 with his family from Denmark. In 1916, Helena became one of two U.S.-Mexico border towns when it was ceded by Mexico along the entire line that separates Bancroft County on the Canadian side from sparsely populated Gros Ventre County on the Mexican side as part of Treaty 7 near present-day Roswell, New Mexico; both sides agreed not to enter into any further hostilities over this matter because there had been no major battle or conflict taking place along that line since 1794 (the date when France ceded Louisiana to Spain). The other remaining U.S.–Mexico border town, Ciudad Juárez (now Chihuahua), also received its own incorporation as a municipality within Mexicali Municipality on October 15th 1909 after months of wrangling between Mexican officials and local ranchers over land ownership rights along what is now I-15 freeway south of downtown Mexicali
