Billings, Montana is a town in the U.S. state of Montana. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grand Forks County and is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, about south of Great Falls. The town was first established in 1881 as a post office called Fort Lyon after General George Armstrong Custer's victory over Sioux warriors at Little Bighorn in 1876. Billings was named for James A. Billings, an American Civil War general and senator from Kansas who had been helped by President Ulysses S. Grant to settle that state in 1867. In 1901, a railroad station was built on what is now Main Street in Billings; this became an important transportation hub for farmers coming to market during the early 20th century. In 1945, when Grand Forks County was created from parts of Cassia and Butte counties, Billings became its county seat and has remained so ever since. The economy of Billings relies largely upon agriculture; livestock and crops are major contributors to local revenue streams. Major employer(s) include First National Bank (founded 1888), numerous small businesses and services such as Veterinary Clinic & Research Center (founded 1990), Elkhorn Casino (opened 1984), United States Post Office Building No.(1936), Tyson Foods Incorporated (founded 1906) and Pembina Pipeline Company Limited (formed 2006).

Billings is the seat of Butte County, Montana, and a town on the Powder River. The population was estimated at 493 in 2000, but as of 2010 it was 544. The town's first post office was established in 1887. Billings grew rapidly during the gold rush era and by 1890 had a population of 1,400. The city was founded in 1901 by businessmen from nearby Rapid City and became an important transportation hub for the Great Western Railroad. In 1905, Billings incorporated as a city and soon became known for its rich silver mines. However, during World War I the city experienced significant economic decline; when production stopped in 1917 it lost over 60% of its GDP. In 1948, Billings annexeded the neighboring town of Missoula to become an even more powerful center for mining and ranching operations. However, after metal prices plummeted in the early 1970s due to supply glutage caused by technological advances in China, local businesses began to experience rapid declines as well. By the turn of the century downtown had been largely emptied out and most residents had moved away or left their jobs to take up different forms of entrepreneurship outside of mining or ranching. In 2001, however, Mayor Tom Tait announced that he would like to see downtown restored as it once was with live music venues and cultural events throughout the year instead of just occasional weekend concerts or festivals. This led to a revitalization effort which included removing all but one block (the northeast corner) of Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue; reintroducinghistoric buildings such as Post Office Square; building new streetscape features such as curving sidewalks around Depot Square; increasing public access through renovated alleyways leading into downtown; adding new streetlights along Main Street; renovating numerous restaurants and bars within blocks surrounding downtown; plus creating many small infrastructure projects such as resurfacing sidewalks on Second Avenue near Depot Square). As part-of this effort different businesses within Downtown started taking back control including several large commercial properties that were forfeited following years of neglect by previous administrations including those belonging to former Mayor Tom Tait himself before he took office in 2011 (eager business owners turned these properties into successful mixed-use developments used both for retail space as well as offices). Since 2001 redevelopment efforts have resulted in a number ofsignificant changes/improvements including: increased pedestrian traffic on main streetside destinations such as Depot Square; renovation/addition/removalof several heritage objects located inside/nearby downtown businesses including Pawnee Hall & Saloon which served primarilyas storage facilities until recently when they were converted into residential units adjacentto Walmart Neighborhood Market;; installationofthetrafficcamerawithimprovedqualityandreducedjerkspottingarounddowntown(); revivalofseveralformermining neighborhoodswithinDowntown properincludingOldMiningCityinthesouthwestendandHillatItaliainthenorthwestend;; InstallationoftheDowntownBroadbandNetworklinksallpartsofthedowntowntogetherviaanadaptertoavirtualnetwork.; increaseinearningsfromvarious CBDbusinessesinsideandoutsidedowntown;; RestorationofthedowntownPiperlimehotelwhichservedasownthegoldrusheraandnowservestattemptsfordistrictly touristsduringwintertime.)
In 1875, a group of farmers in Billings, Montana, formed the Farmers' Union to protect their rights and interests. The union helped to create the state of Montana and played a critical role in its development. In 1905, the Farmers' Union merged with the National Agricultural Workers' Federation (NAWF) to form the United Farm Workers (UFW).
