The present-day garrison was originally composed of six companies of the Missouri Volunteer Infantry and two companies of the Kansas Volunteers. On July 1, 1865, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion were transferred to Fort Riley, Kansas. The garrison was disbanded on December 8, 1865.

West Plains, Missouri was a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census. It is now part of West Plains Village. The town was founded in 1881 by a group of farmers who were moving from Ottawa County to Johnson County because of the unsettled state of the area. The town site was chosen because it had good soil and water resources. The first Post Office opened in 1882. The community developed rapidly due to its location and access to transportation: it was minutes away from both Hannibal and Springfield. In 1886, the first school building was built; it served as the village's primary school until 1926. In 1890, a railroad station was built; it became the town's main artery for transportation and commerce. In 1912, West Plains acquired power from Consumers Gas Company with a contract providing electricity for lights and streetlights; this service continued until 1951 when Citizens Power Company took over responsibility for that function. A permanent church/synagogue was organized in 1913 by local farmers under the leadership of Rabbi Abraham Saperstein after he heard about an existing synagogue in Hannibal which had been abandoned due to lack of funds. A post office operated at West Plains from 1882 through 1926; it closed when mail delivery evolved into telephone service across Johnson County (the first commercial electric service). In 1990, citizens voted to change the name to "West Plains Village."
