West Plains, Missouri is a small town in Clark County, Missouri, United States. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1873 by George and Julia Barnes. Thomas Edison had a laboratory there in the early 1800s. In 1926, West Plains post office was established, and it remained an active post office until it merged with neighboring 800 South to form St Louis Post Office Park in 1996. West Plains has been located on the same spot since 1825 when three brothers named John set up shop as farmers near what is now Doniphan Road and US 160. When the county of Clark was created in 1836, parts of present-day West Plains were included within it, including some of today's buildings on Doniphan Road and Elmwood Avenue downtown. In 1873 George Barnes purchased 640 acres (250 ha) east of present-day West Plains from Elijah Bogan for $4 per acre ($/ha). The land had been owned by fur traders who sold it to prospectors for gold mining purposes during the late 1850s and early 1860s. The Barneses developed their farmstead into a small village that grew rapidly due to cheap land availability and demand for goods brought over by travelers along the road linking Springfield to Kansas City through Missouri City. After Amos Perkins moved his mill north from Independence to plant cotton mills following Civil War reconstruction, he offered insurance services to local merchants which led to business growth around Perkins' store south of current day Elmwood Avenue west of Highway 64 between 1916 and 1928; this growth allowed Perkins family patriarch Augustus Perdue Sr., also known as Gus Perdue III (1863-1948), who served as mayor from 1923 until his death in 1928 to build one of Illinois' first modern city halls on Elmwood Avenue just east of Interstate 70 just south of highway 64 west of Main Street: Gus Perdue III's brick building still stands today across from Perkins' store on Elmwood Ave., next door once again to an old train station! The West Plains School District was formed in 1922, and the first high school opened in 1940. In 1960, West Plains merged with neighboring Honey Creek to form a new district that lasted until 2002. In recent years, West Plains has seen some revitalization efforts; in 2016 it announced plans to build a new shopping mall and hotel.
