The University City Air Force base is home to the Missouri National Guard's 116th Airlift Wing. The wing's mission is to provide airlift support for military operations in the Midwest and Southwest United States. It also provides humanitarian relief and disaster relief. In 1953, when the wing was established, it was one of two wings of the Missouri Air National Guard based at Springfield-based Flight Test Center #1. In 1957, when FLT-117 became operational at UCAC, USAF moved its main headquarters from Springfield to UCAC and activated the wing there as part of III Fighter Command. The wing continued to fly F-105s until 1966 when it transitioned to F-4E Phantoms. In 1978, UCAC activated again after federal funding was cut off for Aerospace Defense Command. The 116th Airlift Wing became an independent unit under I Air Division command with responsibility for all Airlift Wing activities statewide including KC-135 Stratotanker operations at Whiteman AFB near St Louis; and E-3 Sentry AWACS flying over major football games at Busch Stadium in St Louis County while MATS troops were on duty in support of NATO exercises nearby. flew C-130J Hercules aircraft providing aerial refueling during Operation Desert Storm In 1992, a new hangar was built on campus which doubled as the squadron's primary training facility for cadets attending MAF Training School (later USAF Academy). As KC-135s began retiring from service worldwide due to budget cuts, 1 AACW moved into this hangar converting it into a maintenance hangar fully equipped with electronic systems and additional runways not available on other UCAC wings sites; making it one of only two Air Force Wings with such capability in the country UCAC then experienced another period of growth beginning in 1998 when 1 AACW transferred its entire delegations from WCAS/Stratotanker Operations Squadron (VCAS) 3 at Whiteman AFB annexing 2nd Bombardment Squadron (2BS) which had been disbanded at Offutt AFBdue to budget reductions) . This brought about an increase in both airplane types being used by 1 AACW as well as more staff members being added who could manage all aspects of airlift operations including mission planning and coordination with subordinate commands As KC-135s reached their end life expectancies worldwide beginning in 2006 they were replaced by Airmen & SoldiersAIRSTEP(A&S) - a program designed exclusively for university city students that integrates helicopter Pilots onto USAF Active Duty rotary landing aircraft assigned to units throughout Mo Valley area flying short term missions essential for unit readiness ); these missions are now flown using Chinooks However despite this growing trend towards jet powered lift services UCAC will continue operate KCA–48R Longbow helicopters providing Essential Tower Services such as LANDING AND WEATHER DUTY OPERATIONS FROM HANGAR 6 ON WALKER FIELD WITH VISUAL SIGNS TO INDICATE WHEN THE HELICOPTER IS ABOUT TO CLIMB DOWN ; THESE HELICOPTER SERVICES ARE NOW PROVIDED BY PHOTOSHOT CONTROLLED AIRCRAFT On March 12th 2015 1 AACW converted their aging HC–130P bituminous fuel tanker into an MC–130H Aircraft Maintenance Hub Visor Transport Service Unit named "Air Mobility Support" orAMSU;AMSU provides airborne maintainence access point across Joint Base Lewis McChord(JBLM),USAF civilian airport renamed Joint Forces Air Component Headquarters MO Valley - enables commander detachment or real time control over any line Of Sight asset located anywhere within Joint Base Lewis McChord airspace via simultaneous ground based voice/visual signals HERITAGE CONTRIBUTION OF AIR FORCE TANKERS HAS BEEN ENHANCED AS ALL AIR FORCE TANKERS IN UNIVERSITY CITY ARE INTERNATIONAL ARMY MODEL NUMBERED CONTAINING AN HISTORICAL UPDATED ENGINE SPECIFICATION THAT WILL NO LONGER NEED TO BE REPAIRED AS NEW TANKERS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED AND ARE OPERATING UNDER THE CONTROL OF 1 AACW'S MILITARY MAINTENANCE STRUCTURE

The University City Air Force Base gift history dates back to World War II when the United States Air Force took over the city of University City as its major training and equipage depot. The base was originally called the Missouri National Guard Armory, but was changed in 1941 to become the Wright Field Air Depot. Inactivated in 1946, it reopened as the University City Army Ammunition Plant. It closed again in 1992, but reopened in 1996 under new management as the Wright Field Arsenal. Since then it has been an important armament depot for both military and civilian users with a wide range of products and services including ammunition, shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, nuclear weapons testing and research. With more than 12 square miles of property it is one of NASB's largest single employers with more than 2,000 employees.
University City, Missouri is a city in the Ozarks region of the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 25,914 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1855 by Daniel Boone and named for him, although he never visited University City. A post office called University City was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, Union General John Sibley arrived at Moberly and set up his headquarters there before continuing his march westward to Kansas Territory. He ordered his army to halt at University City on July 2 and 3 because there were no hotels or other places where they could rest while they awaited orders from Sibley back east. UCSB (now Central State) College opened its doors on October 1, 1866, with two students followed by thirty-six faculty members three weeks later. In 1870–71 the college purchased land adjoining what are now North High Street and Grove Avenue for $2,500; this purchase doubled the size of UCSB’s campus and made it possible for her to offer undergraduate education without becoming a missionary college like Normal School had been founded earlier that year by Horace Mann and Amos Kendall graduates Ebenezer Howard (1815-1901) and Samuel Morse (1792-1837). In 1872–73 tuition increased from $1 per term to $3 per term due to an increase in enrollment; during these years also UCSB became a coeducational institution under act of Congress approved February 11th, 1875 which granted women equal rights with men at all universities “toilers who maintain themselves within reasonable limits single or married” until such time as “the legislatures thereof may provide otherwise” Ebenezer Howard left UCSB after only one year when he learned that Normal School would be opening soon enough so he returned home to Bethesda instead; however Morse stayed on as advisor/teacher/director/founder/president from 1874 until his death on January 15th 1888 just days shy of his hundredth birthday following a long career as one of America’s most successful electrical engineers On September 10th 1886 Oliver Ellsworth became president pro Tem – fourth man ever elected statewide – following the death of Lucius Cogan three months earlier after serving four terms as governor concurrent with serving two terms as United States Senator from Illinois . On November 3rd 1886 Ellsworth announced plans for expansion into surrounding towns including University City but nothing came about until 1889 when local businessman James Wirtz donated 640 acres (25 km²) adjacent to UIUC campus for use as an agricultural research station known today as Monsanto Research Farmstead

The history of University City begins with the arrival of settlers in 1859. A group of farmers from Illinois arrived in what is now University City in 1857 and began to build a small community on the banks of the Missouri River. By 1861, University City had become a thriving town with several businesses and homes dating back to early days when students from nearby Kansas State College were teaching classes at local schools. As University City grew, it became an important transportation hub for western Kansas County. Thanks to its location on the state line between Missouri and Kansas, University City played an important role in helping gateway towns like Topeka grow into major metropolises by providing access to goods and services necessary for life within both states. This commerce helped drive growth throughout university city during this time period – witness how businessmen such as John Denton started up new businesses or how entire streets were named after famous people thanks to this business activity (eighth Street being named after James Buchanan). In 1903, when Saint Louis officially became known as "Stroudsburg," much importance was placed upon university city's designation as home to America's first Federal Reserve Bank – something that would later play a significant role in stability within metropolitan areas across America during this time period (FDR famously declared bank failures illegal). From 1903 until 1910, Stroudsburg saw rapid growth due primarily to industry which transformed downtown into one massive commercial district complete with theaters, factories, churches and other civic buildings along 4 blocks wide!
