The state legislature met at the old Capitol building from 1851 to 1861 but moved to the State House after that year because of construction costs associated with Missouri's admission into the Union. On February 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated here while attending a military review near town square and only minutes later Confederate General Robert E. Lee arrives here with his army to pursue his assassin. Afterward, most of Springfield lies within Confederate territory until April 9th when Union troops retook it back from the Confederates following Battle of Pea Ridge.
