The Coast Guard was established in 1915 as the Revenue Cutter Service. The service was renamed the Coast Guard on November 1, 1935. On December 12, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the United States responded with World War II. With the war coming to a close, Congress passed a resolution creating the Coast Guard Reserve to provide for future emergencies. The first Coast Guard Reserve unit was organized on February 14, 1942. From that day forward, all coast guard recruits were required to serve in at least five years of active duty before being eligible for promotion to lieutenant or captain. In 1948, the Department of Defense purchased three surplus tugboats from Great Lakes Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company and converted them into coast guard cutters. These vessels were known as CG 71-2 through -6. In 1951, President Harry S Truman signed legislation providing for an unlimited number of coast guard cutters andRM Navy training Ships used by CG until 1959 when they were transferred back to USN control under terms of Title 8 USC § 546(a). The Coast Guard Station in Springfield, Missouri was established on February 6, 1903. The station is part of the United States Coast Guard District 4. In 1923, the Station received a new Healy House which became the home of the Commandant and his staff. In 1928, a Chapel was built on the property and in 1933 a chapel for women was added. The Coast Guard Station in Springfield has been involved in many memorable events over the years including serving as the site of World War II's largest sea-based airlift when more than 100 Boeing 727s transported troops and supplies to Normandy from St Louis Airport. In 1961, a new facility was constructed on land adjacent to the old Healy House that served as Headquarters for both Headquarters Squadron (HS) 5 and HS 1 (the first squadron authorized by Congress to operate warships). This new building included an attached mess hall, four buildings for storage, two piers for boats, three launch ramps and an area for training law enforcement officers.
Springfield is a small town in eastern Missouri. The population was 9,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Highlands Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Springfield was organized on February 6, 1833, from parts of Hamburg and Washington counties. At its incorporation, it had a population of just under 100 people. In 1836, the town annexed the Village of Hollandale to the east and by 1840 had grown to 1,000 residents. In 1849, when Missouri became an slave state after Kansas Territory's admission into the United States as part of a Compromise of 1850, Springfield voted to secede from Missouri and become a free state. The vote was not popular with many residents who were afraid that their property would be taken away if they left. The first post office in Springfield opened in 1839; it was moved to its current location in 1865. The first store in townwas built on Main Street by Ephraim Klinebrewing and sold goods such as groceries and textiles from his home until he sold his business to Hiram Hodge in 1862. It wasn't until 1867 that electric lights were introduced into downtown Springfield; this led to increased development around what is now Main Street including brick buildings erected for businesses like hotels and stores as well as residences which started popping up starting around 1900s also becoming more numerous during World War I when demand for munitions grew throughout America due to Britain's war effort against Germany; these dwellings are still Standing today looking quite handsome even though most have been replaced over time by modern homes or apartments

When the United States acquired Missouri in 1821, it included much of present-day Springfield. The area that would become Springfield was first settled by Native Americans, and early explorers named the site "The Dot" because of the abundance of small trees there. By 1836, most of present-day Springfield had been built. In 1838, a group of investors led by James K. Polk bought land in what is now Springfield and began to build a town on the banks of the Missouri River. They named their new town after General Andrew Jackson's home state - Washington County - in honor of President Jackson's visit to The Dot in 1840. Polk also donated some land to create a park near the town center. The population of Washington County grew quickly during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks to waves of European immigrants who came to farm in what is now Missouri. In 1847, Congress passed an act authorizedthe erection of a national capital on Capitol Hill in Washington City (nowWashington D.C.). The president proposed that Springfield be chosen as the location for this new capital; but local residents objected due to their fears about traffic congestion and other potential problems with an influx of so many people into such an isolated community. In 1850, Congress finally approved Springfield as the new national capital; but again local residents objected until they were satisfied that city planners had made all necessary preparations for a large city with multiple buildings and infrastructure. During its years as both national capital and colonial trading post on The Dot, Springfield attracted leaders from across America: merchants, politicians, scientists, educators and others who tested out new ideas or founded influential institutions hereabouts like American University (1849), Union College (1853) and Washburn University (1901). Some famous citizens include George Washington Carver (1863-1937), Grover Cleveland (1846-1932) and Franklin D Roosevelt (1913-1945). Many important events happened here too - like when Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as America's 44th president on April 14th 1865 at Jefferson Barracks eastward from downtown Springfield; or when Tom Paine delivered his famous speech "Common Sense" at Ulysses S Grant Park northwest from downtown on July 4th 1794
