The first settlers in the area that would become Raymore were farmers and their families who arrived in the mid-19th century. By 1871, there were some eighty people living in what is nowRaymore. The town was founded on a small lot near the present day intersection of Highway 51 and State Route 159, which then consisted of three cabins and a barn. The first store opened in 1872, selling groceries and farm supplies. In 1875, construction began on the town's first school building, which was completed two years later. In 1877, the Missouri River was crossed by wagon road making it possible for goods to be transported from Kansas City to Raymore. This led to increased business for the store and its employees. In 1881, an addition was built to the school building with classrooms and a library. That same year saw the opening of the local post office which became an important factor in Raymore's growth. In 1925, engineer Charles Hinton designed and constructed a new water main that improved water service to Raymore residents. This project marked another milestone in Raymore's history as it helped increase economic development around the community. In 1951, work began on restoring much of downtown Raymore including restoration of several original buildings dating back to when Raymore functioned as a small frontier town
