The Missouri National Guard was organized on August 15, 1861, as the first state militia in the United States. The guard served three Governors during the Civil War and fielded over 5,000 men at its peak in 1865. The guard disbanded in 1871 after a series of scandals involving officers and soldiers. In Poplar Bluff, the National Guard has been responsible for providing security for local businesses since 1913. In that time, the guard has donated property and personnel to numerous organizations including St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (now known as First Baptist Church), PTA No. 1 Elementary School, and Beehive Café & Brewery. Polk. During World War II, the Guard was activated more than any other branch of the military due to its role in providing security for airfields and other strategic locations. It also served in Europe and Asia as part of Army Forces Pacific.
