Marshall, Missouri is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. Marshall was founded in 1839 and named for General James M. Marshall (1783-1864). The city of Marshall began to form in the early 20th century as a result of various transportation connections between Jackson County and nearby Kansas City. By 1910, the population of Marshall had grown to over 2,000 people and it became an incorporated municipality within Jackson County on December 17 that year. On July 14, 1912, the Biograph Theatre Company opened its doors in downtown Marshall with a production of "The Great Gatsby". In 1925, construction began on what would become known as the "Great Mississippi River Bridge", which connectedMarshall with Jefferson City over the Arkansas River. The bridge opened on November 17, 1928. In 1984-1985 during renovation work for I-270/I-435 southbound between Koster Road east and Ulysses Boulevard west near Stinnett Field Airport connector; part of I-435's reconstruction project included demolition or alteration of several buildings located in central Marshalls business district including two banks - First National Bank Building & Trust Co., Incorporated (1925) and Farmers State Bank (1892), both now used as office space by local businesses; also destroyed were three residences - 222 West Main Street (now home to Piggly Wiggly), 223 South Broadway Avenue (now home to Verizon Wireless) and 4 Park Avenue (now home to Ace Hardware). Demolition also occurred at three other buildings: one building served as an administrative building for Centralia Municipal Utility District; another housed a grocery store before it was converted into office space by Jardine Management Corporation; while still others were used when Centralia changed its name from Marshall to Independence in 1955 due to statehood legislation enacted by then Governor John Connally following Kansas' admission into the Union that year. On October 11, 2003 Hurricane Rita made landfall just north of Marshaltown along Interstate 435 about 10 miles south of El Dorado Hills after making landfall near Corpus Christi Texas on September 15 that year with winds up to 110 mph(155 km/h). Marshall was a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States until it merged with St. Joseph to form the City of Marshall on January 1, 2003. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General James K. Polk who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war. The first whites to arrive in this area were French colonists who built a fur trading post near what is now Marshall on July 4, 1778. When the Treaty of Paris was signed ending the American Revolutionary War, most of Missouri ceded to Great Britain and became part of the new British empire as part of the Treaty of Paris (1783). In 1809 Spain ceded Chihuahua and other areas east of Mexico City to Mexico under Captain Pedro de Alvarado for $15 million dollars that included land around Marshalltown and Pueblo de San Miguel de Allende (now El Paso). In 1812, when Jefferson Davis became president because Andrew Johnson had been impeached, he ordered General James K. Polk from his position as commander-in-chief due to Polk's involvement in leading an unsuccessful attempt to secede from the United States in February 1861 during the American Civil War known as "theApril Fools' Day" campaign. Marshall was platted by local man John Beckwith on March 12, 1830 based on surveys made by surveyor George Stephenson while he surveyed roads between St Louis and Cairo through Clay County which turned out not be practical because there wasn't enough water available for mills or agriculture anywhere near present day Marshalltown. On December 14th 1830 William Wingate purchased Beckwith's plat naming it Plank Roadstead just south of present day Cooks Run Rd/Ute Pass Rd crossing into Indian Territory then east along that line about two miles southeast cornering what is now Indian Creek Blvd from modern day Slaughter Rd northeast across what is now OldMarshall Crossroads onto today’s I-435 main road about 8 miles northwest cornering where US Route 66 joins I-435 just south of present day Eldorado Springs before turning northwest again onto today’s I-435 crossroads also just south of Eldorado Springs thence northeasterly almost due west along current route 66 paralleling its course across some very rough hills forming today’s Big Bend National Park boundary about 8 miles northeast cornering Grand Washita River within that boundaries Mapleton County OK map
Marshall was founded in 1835 by Captain John Marshall, who named it after his father. The town grew rapidly, and by 1851 had a population of 1,500. By 1870, the population had increased to 4,500 and the city was incorporated. In 1907, Marshall became the seat of county government for Cass County. The city annexed portions of Union Township in 1922 and 1928. On March 15, 1951, Marshall was merged into Stroudsburg with its then-population of over 10,000 people.
