The Missouri National Guard was established on August 28, 1861, as the 1st Brigade, Missouri Volunteer Infantry. It was consolidated with the 6th Brigade, Missouri Volunteer Infantry on November 15,1861. The brigade fought in the American Civil War and was disbanded on December 9, 1865. The first national guard gift to Joplin was a rifle from Captain Samuel W. Peck of the 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteers (now part of the Missouri National Guard). In 1868, a bell was donated by Mrs. John J. Weems of St. Louis to commemorate the anniversary of the war effort in Kansas and western Nebraska. On October 12, 1870, another bell was given to Joplin by Colonel Edward Sibley of Company K (2nd Regiment) Ulysses S Grant’s army veteran regiment that had come through town during the Civil War just before it disbanded at Appomattox Court House. In 1893 a flagstaff and colors were donated by General James Longstreet to commemorate his service in World War I as commander of VII Corps in France and Belgium; IV Corps in Germany; XII Corps in Italy; XV Corps in Spain; and XXXIII Corps in Greece detachment commanded by General Erwin Rommel which fought against Bolsheviks outside Athens during WWII until May 1945 when he surrendered unconditionally at Salzburg Austria after days of heavy fighting Joplin also received an impressive number of battle honours including: Battle Creek Campaign December 16-20 1864 – Major General Elijah Thornton’s division led by Brigadier General Franklin Pemberton repulsed repeated attacks by Confederate cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel William Woods Friday night after Wednesday night’s fierce fighting near Battle Creek bridge over Big Blue River northwest of this city Monday morning February 8 1865 First Bull Run Valley Campaign June 14-18 65 – Brigadier General James Halleck’s division attacking Confederate right flank under Major General Edmund Kirby Smith met determined resistance from infantry units under Lieutenants Colonel Lewis Casswell(Garrison Armies), George Armstrong Custer(7th Cavalry), David Hunter(4th Cavalry) southeast of Manassas Junction Sunday afternoon July 2 1863 Emancipation Proclamation April 20 1862 – Aide de camp to Secretary Chase Jackson for delivery at personal home President Abraham Lincolnsigned this proclamation ordering all slaves within sixteenth parallel States free immediately without any conditions or qualifications

The Missouri National Guard was organized on July 1, 1861. The first unit to be mobilized was the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment of Missouri Volunteers. The regiment consisted of men from Joplin and other surrounding towns. The battalion served in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The battalion was mustered out of service on September 18, 1865. After the war, most of the regiment's members joined Union forces and fought in the American Civil War again. In 1870, most of the regiment re-enlisted in the Union army and served until 1875 when they were discharged because of Shirtless Laws which made it illegal for soldiers to wear clothing outside their barracks. After World War I ended, some members rejoined their old unit while others decided to form their ownunit called "The Joplin Armory" in 1922. Today, all original units are still part of the Missouri National Guard with just a few exceptions such as The Joplin Armory Infantry Company which is now part of The Illinois Army National Guard and is not under any state jurisdiction
Joplin, Missouri was founded on November 1, 1871 by James W. Joplin and his wife Mary. The town had a population of around 10,000 when it was first established. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century and by the early 20th century had a population of over 100,000 people. Joplin became an important center for music and culture in the region. The city was an important producer of blues music and has been mentioned as one of the most influential cities in rock and roll history. During the 1960s, Joplin experienced a significantatile growth as a center for rock music production with two main venues becoming popular tourist attractions – The Stax Recording Studio and The Roxy Theatre. However, following the death of Joplins frontman Robert Johnson in 1967, much of its cultural significance faded away over time. Today, Joplin is mostly known for its large commercial district which contains several buildings used for storeys of flats or apartments overlooking Main Street.

Joplin, Missouri is a city located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 109,391 at the 2010 census. Joplin is the largest city in Lower Missouri and second largest in Overland Park Township. The first known inhabitants of what would become Joplin were the Hennepin culture, who inhabited the area from about 3200 BCE to 1700 CE. The Pawnees also lived in this area at some point before 1800 CE. The first permanent settler in what would become Joplin was Elijah Hicks on March 1, 1835, when he moved from Nauvoo, Illinois to purchase land east of present-day Springfield for $1 per acre. In 1838, John O’Neill purchased 640 acres west of present-day Joplin from Hicks for $10 per acre. On July 4, 1839, O'Neill founded the town of Jacksonville and named it after his patron saint – St. James arrived there on August 25 that year with his wife and six children as part of a group led by Captain Samuel Morse to explore new territory lying between Springfield and St Louis. Jacksonville grew rapidly due to its good transportation connections and rich agricultural resources which enabled it to join the Illinois Central Railroad network by 1840. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much activity took place within or around Jacksonville including several raids into nearby Union territory by Confederate sympathizers seeking arms and munitions caches as well as opportunity for plundering local businesses and homes. In 1863–64 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest occupied Jacksonville during an attempt to march through then Union Territory under cover of darkness so as not to be detected by Union patrols escorting other forces toward Cairo Junction on Interstate 70 near St Louis; however no damage was done and no prisoners were taken
