This area became known as Bellefontaine Township. The first school in Bellefontaine Township was built in 1827. The township lost its status as a municipality in 1873, but it still has a few residents living there today. One of the most famous people from Bellefontaine Township was James K. Polk who served as President of the United States from 1845-1849. He is also recognized for his role in the Louisiana Purchase which made America become a superpower.
