The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The town has a history that goes back to 1819 when it was called "Belleville". Bellefontaine first began to form as families moved into the area following the end of the American Civil War. By 1870, most of what is now Bellefontaine had been developed and by 1880 it consisted of only a few houses scattered around what is now Main Street. Development continued until after World War II when many residents left for better jobs in other parts of Missouri or for resettlement in other countries during the post-war period. The current town square was platted in 1909 and named after Mrs John Withers who donated land to form the square. A fountain and several monuments were dedicated in honor of Mrs Withers including one that honors her son-in-law Dr J C Whitehead who served as mayor from 1951 to 1957 and also founded nearby Clearwater Air Force Base which stands today as one of Bellefontaine's main attractions. Most notably, Belleville Elementary School (now part of Stroudsburg Area Community Schools) played an integral role in developing Bellefontaine into a vibrant community with its own school system and cultural traditions that continue today.
