Oxford, Mississippi was founded by the owners of a plantation in 1819. The town prospered for many years until the 1800s when cotton prices plummeted and the population dwindled. In 1892, Oxford was designated as the seat of government for Choctaw County. It remained that way until 2003, when it merged with Stoneville to form Jackson County. The first inhabitants of Oxford were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near present-day Oxford Landing. The first white settlers arrived in 1819 after purchasing a plantation from its original owner, James Worthy. The town grew rapidly because of its location on the Mississippi River and its access to transportation. By 1830, there were over 100 residents in Oxford; however, by 1840 only 10 remained due to factors such as violence and disease. In 1892, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Oxford became part of Choctaw County. This move increased racial tension in the area which led to several incidents including a mass shooting that killed six whites and three black men in 1893. In response to these events, Congress passed the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted African Americans rights equal to those enjoyed by white people. This amendment made Oxford an important center for political activity during this time period. During World War II, Oxford played an important role in supplying munitions for southern Europe; however, due to its strategic position on I-10 highway it was also vulnerable to Allied air raids during that conflict. Overall, however,Oxford fared well during World War II thanks largely to its infrastructure development projects such as widening I-10 corridor and building hospitals and schools throughout town>. Oxford, Mississippi was founded in 1847 by the merger of two small settlements, Oxford and Clarksdale. The population of Oxford grew rapidly thanks to its location on the Natchez Trace Railroad and the opportunities for farming and fishing that it offered. In 1854, a post office was established in Oxford, and within a few years almost all of the town's residents were employed in agriculture or manufacturing. By 1865, however, cotton production had become such an important part of Oxford's economy that the city began to decline. In addition to economic problems, there were also religious differences between local Baptists and Methodists which contributed to tension between the two groups. In 1865, however, Union soldiers burned down several homes in Oxford as part of their campaign against Confederate General Robert Easley. This event led to increased tensions between local Baptists and Unionists which continued until 1880 when both sides finally agreed to work together for reconstruction purposes.
