The National Guard of Mississippi is a state-sanctioned military force in the United States that is available to protect local communities and Citizens. The Guard has been in existence since 1861, when the Confederate States of America requested its creation due to the increasing tensions between their states and the Union. The Guard was initially organized into two brigades but was eventually redesignated as a corps. There are currently over 329,000 Guardsmen serving in 67 states across the country.
