Greenville, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 4,059 at the 2010 census. Greenville is the county seat of Hinds County. The area that now forms Greenville was first settled by Mississippians in the late 18th century. The town's name may derive from an Indian word meaning "muddy creek," as most of the present-day town was built on low ground near the Cahaba River. In 1824, Captain James Wilkinson founded a Methodist mission here and named it after his mentor, George Whitefield. The mission later became known as First Baptist Church (now part of University Afloat Baptist Church). A post office called Greenville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1936. In 1840, General Nathan Bedford Forrest founded a plantation here called Forrest's Landing on the banks of the Cahaba River northwest of present-day Greenville. The land around what is now Greenville had been leased from local landowners since 1790 by Colonel John Marshall grant for 640 acres (2 square miles). When Forrest bought this land he renamed it Hernando Plantation after his brother Hernando de Soto y Prudente y Flores who fought against Spanish forces during Spain's Mexican War (1810-1821). Over time many other families purchased parcels along or adjacent to Forrest's Landing including those of Andrew Johnson and Jared Sparks who donated land for Estancia San Francisco School which became Alabama Polytechnic Institute before finally becoming Alabama State University. When General Robert Ewell arrived in Mobile on July 9th 1861 with Confederate forces to defeat Union forces under Ulysses S Grant at Gettysburg he found much of East Tennessee Valley still unfazed by war as its people were busy planting cotton plantations nearby and raising livestock while their menfolk served in Confederate military campaigns across South Carolina and Texas respectively Forrest decided to move his operations northeastward into what would become Hinds County following his victory over Union Major General Nathaniel Banks at Rossburg on July 16th 1861 At Hernando Plantation he appointed Benjamin Fenton as his personal secretary Aftermath of Battle Of Chickamauga: On September 3rd 1861 Federal troops under Brigadier General Ambrose Burnside burned all but two buildings within minutes of entering Garrison Station located about one mile south east of present day Greenville when they encountered Confederate cavalry led by Colored Troop Sergeant William Moseley just outside entrance to Station burning everything inside except furniture; total loss reported at $6018 dollars To date there has never been any definitive answer as to why these buildings were destroyed but some speculation suggests that soldiers considered them too inflammable or simply unpleasant to live in given their recent experience during battles such as Chickamauga where firefights regularly ensued
