One of these donations was an armament shipment from Germany that included rifles, cannons, and ammunition for use at the military academy. The armament shipment was so successful that General Grant ordered more shipments in order to keep up with demand. Over time, other gifts were given by soldiers and their families in order to support the academy financially and also provide education opportunities for future students. Clinton is a town in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,372 at the 2010 census. Clinton was founded in 1836 by John Clinton and his wife Sarah as a small community on the banks of the Yazoo River. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a railroad line and its access to markets for goods brought overland from Mobile and New Orleans. In 1843, Clinton became the county seat of Harrison County after it was created from parts of Jackson and Wilkinson Counties. During Reconstruction (1865-1912), local Republican Party leaders constructed an all-black school in Clinton which functioned as an educational hub for black Mississippians. In 1889, white Republicans moved the county courthouse out of town to make way for a new courthouse that would be dedicated to them. In 1898, then-Governor William McKinley issued a proclamation declaring Clinton "the Most Black Place in America." That same year, McKinley also announced plans for annexing what were then white townships into Jackson County so that more people could be crammed into one county without having any say in their own destiny. This action provoked angry protests by local residents who saw themselves as separate and unequal under McKinley's policies. The annexation never happened because racial tensions continued to grow throughout much of the20th century despite efforts by both parties to address them
