The history of the North Mankato National Guard is reflective of the community it serves. The unit has been in existence since 1938 and its members have served in many capacities, including Auxiliary Police, Fire Department, and Veterans Affairs Department. In 2013, the unit was renamed the Minnesota National Guard and awarded full statehood by the Minnesota Legislature. Today’s North Mankato National Guard is made up of men and women from all walks of life who are dedicated to keeping our community safe and secure. From activeduty military members to civilian volunteers, every member plays an important role in keeping our community running smoothly. Our units operate under a variety of commanders with a heavy emphasis on Community Oriented Policing (COP). This effort revolves around building relationships with residents through crime prevention programs and providingquality service to our citizens. Our mission reflects that which Canadians hold dear: To serve their country with distinction while helping others achieve theirs. The National Guard is a service that many people take for granted. The Guardsmen and Women of the United States Military have been providing essential services to our country since 1776. Today, there are over 100,000 Guardsmen and Women serving in all 50 states and D.C., as well as in every military unit in the U.S. The National Guard also provides support to state and local governments through parades, recruitment drives, disaster response efforts, and other events. Some people may not know what the National Guard does or why they should care about it. But the Guardsmen and Women of the United States Military play an important role in safeguarding our democracy, our Constitution, and our way of life. In fact, some of them have even given their lives for their country – something few civilians ever achieve. And while there are many different reasons why someone might want to join the National Guard or become involved with its mission – from helping out during a natural disaster to protesting or fighting against injustice – one thing is for sure: it’s a great place to start if you want to learn more about American history and culture!
The North Mankato National Guard was established in 1907. The unit has served in many different capacities throughout its history including being a part of the Minnesota National Guard, the Minnesota Army National Guard, and the Minnesota Air National Guard.
North Mankato, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 17,868 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Minnesota by population. It is also the only city in Minnesota without a metropolitan area. North Mankato was founded on May 10, 1858 as a result of a land lottery and incorporated on December 3, 1859. The original town plat included only 8 blocks (now north side of First Street). In 1861, NorthMankato's first post office opened and served just over 20 residents. By 1865, there were over 100 residents and by 1870, there were over 150 residents. During the Civil War era for much of the year 1862-1865 various skirmishes took place around NorthMankato between Union forces and Confederate troops who had moved into what would become Minnesota from Illinois and Iowa Territory under General George Armstrong Custer's command withintent to stage an invasion of Canada or invade Chicago to overthrow Abraham Lincoln’s new administration. This area became known as "The Battlefield" because so many lives were lost including three members of the local Stroud family – father John A., son Julius B., and daughter Alice—killed during this period when their wagon train was ambushed near present day Southdale High School while traveling east on US Highway 35W from Minneapolis to Winnipeg on October 12th 1862 near present day North Mankato township In 1863–1864 two large cemeteries were built in what is now downtown NorthMankato: Lighthouse Hill Cemetery located behind former Ladd Paper Company building which still stands today; Second National Cemetery located east side of First Street between Broadway & University Avenue; these cemeteries are now part of Forest Lawn Memorial Park A major event that took place in NorthMankato during this time was pandemic called “Pine Sola” which began spreading through America late winter/early spring 1865 after being introduced from Europe via travelers arriving at American ports such as New Orleans before departing for their home countries due to lack of air travel at that time approximately 30% or more all men then living worldwide died from this pandemic including many Americans who lived northeast of Stroudsburg PA where pine sola originated
The National Guard has been around since the Revolutionary War. It was originally made up of militia units from states that were loyal to the British Crown, but eventually it grew into a nationwide force. The Guard is one of the many branches of government in the United States and its purpose is to provide support for the military, as well as protect public safety. One of the first national guard gift history items was a flagpole. This was donated by Captain John Graves Simcoe, who served as Commandant of the Canadian Militia during the Revolution. The flagpole became an important part of national guard culture and functioned as a rallying point for members across America. Mankato, Minnesota is a small town located in the far-northwest corner of Minnesota. The name Mankato comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "homestead" or "settlement." The town was founded in 1854 by Norwegian Christiansen and his family. In 1867, Mankato became the capital of Dakota Territory. In 1912, it became a city. Mankato has had a variety of businesses and organizations operate within its boundaries over the years. Some notable businesses include: Northland Dairy, Hennepin County government building, First National Bank of Mankato, and United States Post Office (Mankato). Additionally, Mankato has been home to various professional sports teams over the years including the North Stars (NHL), Moose Jaw Warriors (AJHL), and Whitecaps FC (MLS).
In the late 1800s, North Mankato was a small town in the far western corner of Minnesota. It was known for its potatoes and other agricultural products. The town had only a few hundred residents when it was founded in 1881. By 1910, it had grown to over 1,000 people. The town developed around two railroad stations, which made it convenient to get food and goods to market. The population grew even more after the completion of the Great Northern Railway in 1915. North Mankato continued to grow until it reached its peak during the 1930s. However, during the Great Depression, the population decreased sharply and by 1940 there were only about 150 people living in North Mankato.
