The North Mankato Air Force Base was established in 1948 as a United States Air Force installation. The base was closed in 2012 and transferred to the Minnesota National Guard. It is now home to the 172nd Airlift Wing, which provides airlift services for both military and civilian populations in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Airforce gift history at North Mankato AFB began with World War II when the USAAF established an airfield here to provide aircraft and personnel for occupation duty in Europe. After the war, North Mankato AFB became home to one of the USAF’s five Bombardment Wings, based out of Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP). From its inception until 1961, NMAFB also hosted four fighter squadrons equipped with Republic F-84 Thunderjets and Lockheed C-130 Hercules transports. These squadrons flew missions over continental Europe during Operation Overlord; operations that resulted in extensive damage to enemy infrastructure and thousands of casualties. In 1961, when Bomarc Airlines merged with Northwest Airlines, NMAFB became part of their parent company; Northwest Airlift Services Incorporated (NANS). This led to increased activity at NANS – including storage and 1980s conversion of former RCAF hangars into leased facilities for all manner of USAF jets: McDonnell Douglas DC-9/11 jetliners were first flown here on November 3rd, 1988; Kirtland AFB’s last CF-18 Hornet arrived on October 9th, 2003! Today’s 172nd Airlift Wing operates Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers from three main hub locations: Grumman E2C Neptune from Minnetonka Municipal Airport south of town; Boeing 727Fs from St Cloud Municipal Airport northwest of town; and Beechcraft A350Ms from Clinton County Regional Airport southeast of town! As a result of these hub locations plus primary support assets located at three separate maintenance sites throughout central Minnesota – this wing offers citizens access to more than 800 square miles airspace! In addition to its global reach via KC-135 waterborne capabilities; 172nd Airlift Wing members are also proficient pilots with Handley Page HTV6A(D) helicopters utilized for Search & Rescue (SAR) operations as well as law enforcement search warrants or hostage situations! Today’s North Mankato Air Force BaseCivilian population totaled 1123 persons as of September 2017 [*] [*] Although originally subordinate directly to USAF Headquarters in Washington D.C., units stationed within NORAD extended their authority up throughlevel commands after unification on April 15th 1972 [*]. On 30 Sep 1957 HQ USAF absorbed Twelfth Air Force's Alaskan Command squadron (CVG 121) thusactivating all Alaska ANG squadrons componentsof 12 AF HQ simultaneously becoming Eighteenth Tactical Aerospace Division [ TAD ]. The North Mankato Air Force Base gift history began in 1940 when the United States Air Force purchased land east of the city for its new airbase. The base was known as Wright Field and served as a training ground for fighter pilots and bombers until it was closed in 1945. In 1946, the United States Army took over Wright Field and renamed it Fort Snelling. The Army used the base to train infantry, artillery, cavalry, armor,engineers and other related military personnel. The fort remained closed until 1951 when it was transferred to the United States Air Force. The USAF used Fort Snelling as an airfield until 1973 when it was closed down due to budgetary problems. In 1978, the Minnesota Department of Administration acquired all of former Wright Field property east of Mankato and renamed it North Mankato Air Force Base. It remains today one of the most active U.S. airfields with over 1,000 aircraft operations per year according to Wingate papers from 1947-1988).
North Mankato, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Cass County. The population was 382 at the 2010 census, up from 350 at the 2000 census. It is located on the south bank of the Mankato River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Minneapolis-St. Paul and 30 miles (48 km) west of Duluth. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now North Mankato were French missionaries in 1803; they built a trading post on an island in the river near present-day Fillmore Park and called it "Mankato" after their then-native village in Maine. The Dutch fur traders had also established posts here by 1795 but abandoned them around 1800 because of difficulties getting supplies through rapids on the river into their settlements in New Sweden. In 1854, United States Senator Charles Sumner helped found what would becomeMinnesota State University (MSU). In 1865, Minneapolis became its first city, while Mankato remained a small town until it became a city again in 1904 when it annexed part of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

The first post office wasestablished in 1858 and the first store opened in 1860. In 1872, Shields donated land to build what became the current arts complex known asShields Center forthe Arts. The center includes a theater, an art museum, a library and several dozen residential units. It also contains two tennis courts and three football fields used by local high school teams. North Mankato was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1854. The city's first post office was established in 1855. By 1865, the population of North Mankato had reached 10,000. In 1870, a railroad junction was built in the community and mail service began to the town from Minneapolis. In 1881, North Mankato became a city with its own government and police force. The same year saw the opening of the first grocery store in the city and by 1907, there were six businesses operating in North Mankato. The population of North Mankato peaked at 20,000 during World War I and between 1920-1930 it decreased to 12,500 due to automobiles becoming more popular. However, during World War II the population increased to 22,500 due to an influx of military personnel stationed in nearby Duluth. Afterward, crime rates decreased and by 1990 they were back at their pre-war level.
