The USS Constitution (1789-1865) was the first US Navy ship to be built at the Fridley shipyard. The Constitution served in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War before being decommissioned in 1865. In 1884, a group of businessmen from Fridley founded the Merchants Association of Minneapolis which organized a local navy gift history. In 1907, Minneapolis became the first city in America to have a naval fleet and in 1912, it joined Canada’s Royal Canadian Navy as part of its First World War effort. The USS Constitution Museum opened its doors in 1964 and has since been responsible for preserving and displaying Ships from both American Naval History and Canadian Naval History. Today, there are more than 350 artifacts on display inside and outside of the museum which includes an impressive collection of warships built during both world wars.

Fridley is home to the original Hibiscus Highway and Fruitland Railroad Museum.The town was founded by Danish immigrants in 1876 as a post office named Fruitland after their fruit farm in central Minnesota. The name changed to Fridley in 1907 when it became a village. Fridley was incorporated as a village on February 17, 1907, by order of the Board of Commissioners of Dakota County.[1] The first mayor was Selvin Olson and the first treasurer was Hjalmar Olsen Rasmussen. In 1912, Fridley had its own school board with Julius Hanson serving as superintendent for two years until he resigned to become an agent with American Express Company. In 1916, Fredrik Funke took over as superintendent and served until his retirement in 1948;[2] then Harry Belanger took over for six years until his death on December 12th 1961.[3][4] On July 1st 1965,[5] Fridley became a city under terms of an act by the Minnesota Legislature known as "An Act To Grant Cityhood To Fridley"[6][7][8][9][10] which granted city status to what had been considered just a rural hamlet since 1907! In 1966,[11] Mayor John Kapp appointed Melvin Weiland our first City Councilman who would continue to serve through 2017 when term expired and then were replaced by Donny Hechtman who also represented Ward 2 on council from 2017-present

In 1828, the first school was built in what is now Fridley. The town's first post office opened in 1838. The population of Fridley grew rapidly from its founding until it reached its peak around 1880. By 1920, the population had decreased by almost half due to various factors such as the arrival of larger towns and cities and a decrease in agricultural production. However, Fridley has continued to grow since then thanks to its current position as a small city with over 100,000 residents.
