The railroad arrived to Edina in 1865 when it tracks ran through the community center which served as both a depot and terminal until 1971 when Amtrak took over service from the Minneapolis- St Paul Depot which closed down after being used as a movie set for "Ender's Game". By 1870, there were 10 businesses operating within 1 mile radius of where present day Highway 5 intersects Main Street; these included two banks with their own buildings - First National Bank & Trust Company and Merchants National Bank - 2 stores - Johnnie's Store & Emporium and Smith’s Hardware Shop - 3 restaurants - Gopher Inn restaurant chain started by Wm J Marsh & brothers - 2 churches – First Presbyterian Church established 1863 and Second Presbyterian Church established 1865 both with meetinghouses adjacent to their respective campuses today known as North High School & South Middle School while one school building still stands across from current day Cemetery Road serving grades PreK-8th grade along with 4 grain elevators that handled agricultural products until 1984 when they were converted into apartments/condos since then known as Village Center developments etc... Units continue to be developed along Hwy 5 throughout much of this century including an apartment complex now known as “The Villages” near present day US 6 exit

The area that now makes up Edina was first settled by Native Americans in the early 19th century. In 1838, landowner John Doherty donated 640 acres (240 hectares) to the city of Minneapolis for development as farmland. The city built a courthouse and jail on the site in 1849.
