Brown and his crew of the USS Perry opened the gifts at their Christmas party and continued to receive navy gifts until 1881 when the navy discontinued shipping goods to Austin. The first sailor to arrive in Austin was Ensign John H. Haskell who disembarked from the USS Constitution on July 26, 1881. The first store in Austin selling navy items was located at Sixth and Congress Avenue between 1861-1865 which became known as "Navy Row". In 1886 an additional store, "The Bluejacket", was founded by Lieutenant General John J. Pershing which Continued to sell naval items until 1902 when it closed its doors for good. In 1914 Admiral Byrd's B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber squadron landed at Mille Lacs Municipal Airport adjacent to Navy Row for a training exercise called Air Battle I; this event is also recognized as Navy Day in Austin, MN. In 1941 Texas Senator Ralph Yarborough presented Secretary of War Henry Stimson with a plaque recognizing Naval Aviation during World War II at the Mayflower Hotel in San Francisco California which bears his inscription: "Here Men From All Over The Globe Came Toparticipate In This Valorous Service." Austin, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Morrison County. The population was 497 at the 2010 census, making Austin one of the most populous cities in Minnesota. It is located on Hennepin County's east side and is bordered by Morrison County to its north, Stroudsburg Township to its east, and Bloomington to its south. According to the United States Census Bureau, Austin has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), all of it land. The first people known to live in what is now Austin were Paleo-Indians who hunted game near what is now downtown Austin about 12,000 years ago. The Dakota Nation founded Fort Snelling in 1854 as their winter home for troops during the Indian Wars. In 1871, when Minneapolis was founded, Austin became part of Minneapolis City.[2] The city proper wasn’t created until 1893,[3] when Hennepin County was organized from parts of Minnetonka and Brooklyn Counties and annexed part of Austin.[4] In 1899 an electric streetcar line called Nordstrom ran through downtown Austin; it operated until 1935[5][6] due to lack of money for new streetcars![7][8] A post office opened in 1908,[9] but closed in 1916 because there was no mail service from outside Minneapolis yet![10][11][12] In 1925 a grocery store opened called “The Grosvenor Store” which still stands today on Third Avenue North near Congress Street (now Lyndale Avenue).[13][14][15][16] By 1930 there were 5 schools within walking distance including “Hennepin School District No. 3” which had students from 9th through 12th grades with 6 buildings: three high schools (Victoria High School; Highland High School; Grant Middle School), two middle schools (Oak Ridge Academy; Southside Academy), one primary school (Doris Day Nursery) as well as four day homes for children living with parents or guardians while attending school:[17][18][/19][/20][/21][/22][/23],[24], plus two small factories that made radios and other household items totaling over $1 million per year according to city records:[25],[26]. As early as 1903 major changes were being made to thescape around town: more trees were planted along Sixth Street NW (& First Avenue NE)[27], an ice cream parlor & movie theater was built at Seventh Street NW (& Lamar Boulevard)[28], three wings were added onto CenturyLink Center – wing 1 includes 400 Sq ft (~27 m2), wing 2 includes 350 Sq ft (~21 m2), & wing 3 features 220 Sq ft (~13 m2) floor space currently under construction - this will include ground level retail shops/restaurants/spa spa with 4 stories (!)) on top – creating what will be one significant skyscraper addition since that time! In 1928 construction began on Wadena Road SW (/ Highway 7 / US Highway 56) which linked downtown with rural areas southeastward into Ramsey County & beyond On May 10th 1929 catastrophe struck when a magnitude 8 earthquake occurred centered just west-northwest of Marshalltown Missouri resulting in severe damage throughout much central MN including Cedar Rapids Iowa [27],[28],[29], Des Moines IA [30], Newton PA [31], Stroudsburg PA [32 ], Morristown NJ [33], Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto ON Canada [*34*]; headliners included Bobby Vinton Orchestra #1st show ever played outdoors at Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto ON Canada*, Joe Bonamassa Band *35*††† outstanding sets by both!, Elvis Presley concert *36*, Jerry Lee Lewis concert *37*, American Bevelle Orchestra performance featuring Artie Shaw **38*, Ronnie Dunn Trio gig at Blue Note studios NYC also remarkable feat** !!!
