The Austin, Minnesota Coast Guard Station has been a part of the city since 1912. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was established in 1903 and the current station was built in 1912. In that time, the Coast Guard has responded to a variety of emergencies including fires, floods, storms and earthquakes. The Station is home to both the Harbor Patrol Unit and the Helicopter Squadron. The Harbor Patrol Unit responds to traffic accidents and helps with vessel security while also providing law enforcement services during special events or when needed for safety reasons. The Helicopter Squadron provides air support for search and rescue missions as well as disaster relief efforts. The Coast Guard Station plays an important role in keeping our community safe by responding to emergencies quickly and effectively. The history of Coast Guard vessels can be traced back to 1795 when the first cutter, Pemaquid, was built at Deptford in London. She served as part of the British fleet during the Napoleonic Wars and was used to transport goods between England and France. In 1814, Congress passed an act authorizing the construction of six coast guard vessels. These were named after states in America: Maine (1815), New Mexico (1816), California (1819), Florida (1821), and Texas (1826). The first ship constructed under this decree was USS Constitution, launched on October 26th, 1827. She served as flagship for Commodore John Rodgers during the Mexican-American War and later served as part of American forces fighting in Puerto Rico during Spanish rule. In 1898, while fighting off naval attacks on San Juan Island, Constitution sank with all hands after being hit by a torpedo from Spanish ships HMS Canopus and Guerrera. On July 4th, 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9981 which ordered all coastal batteries within five miles of any city or town be destroyed along with all stores inside those batteries. This order allowed for civilian protection from potential destruction by military forces while also providing resources to help law enforcement officers do their job successfully. Since then many more coast guard vessels have been purchased by both federal and state governments making them essential pieces of maritime infrastructure. Some notable examples include USCGC Chesapeake Bay (built in 1978) which serves as Headquarters for Law Enforcement Operations aboard our country’s coasts; CG Point Lookout National Monument’s USS Constellation(1996) which patrols off North Carolina’s Outer Banks; CG Seattle’s MV Northwest Passage patrol boat(2006) that helps keep open sea traffic flowing through Alaska’s Alexander Archipelago; USCGC Miami Beach’s Cutty Sark(1991) that provides temporary shelter for marine mammal research; CG Long Beach Harbor's PCL-5(1988) that assists firefightersfighting wildfires; CG Hampton Roads' HMCS Canada Today there are over 1,000 coast guard vessels operated by both federal agencies and state governments across America spanning a wide range of missions including search & rescue operations such as Martha's Vineyard SAR team,[4] anti-drug patrols[5], humanitarian assistance[6], environmental monitoring[7], fisheries management[8], coastal defense activities like vehicle clearing operation or debris removal tasks[9],[10],[11],[12],[13],[14]), search & seizure operations such asOperation Neptune's Spear against smugglers off Mexico's Baja Peninsula,[15]; disaster relief missions like Typhoon Haiyan/Florence in Tacloban City,[16]and even recreational fishing boats!
