Woodhaven was a small village in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It is now known as the town of Woodhaven-Langston and it is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now Woodhaven were Michael and Catherine Kinney who arrived in 1836 from New York City. They built a cabin on the banks of the Saginaw River and named their settlement for their home state, New York. In 1840, Isaac Ratcliffe established an agricultural business near present-day Langston. He brought his wife with him to start a family there and they raised five children there before moving to Clinton Township in 1854. In 1867, John Waddell founded another farmstead just east of Langston on what is now Highways 22 and 24. Waddell named his new community after General Philip Sheridan's victory at Fallen Timbers in November 1862 during the American Civil War. The community quickly grew due to its fertile land, good schools, and easy access to transportation (the first train arrived at nearby Lansing in 1868). By 1870, Woodhaven had over 1,000 residents. In 1888, a post office called "New Harmony" was established in Woodhaven by Rev James Ahern with help from local farmers Amos Goodrich and Cornelius Daly; it operated until 1930. Ahern also donated land for a public school which became one of Lansing's first high schools (grades K-12) in 1893; it still serves students today! That same year saw the opening of Michigan State University (MSU) - one of America's older universities - making Woodhaven both an academic center as well as an important commercial hub for agricultural products and services outfitting military units training abroad! During World War II (1939-1945), many civilians left Woodhaven for war production sites outside of Michigan because the economy was struggling after Pearl Harbor; however, most residents returned when war ended two years later!
