By Donny H. It is with great sadness that we must report the passing of one of our most beloved policemen, Bill McFarlane. Bill was a long time member of the South Lyon Police Department and a true friend to all who knew him. He was truly dedicated to his job and enjoyed spending time with his colleagues on patrol and at the station. In addition to his many years of service to the department, he was also an excellent husband and father. We will sorely miss him, but we know that he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

The South Lyon Police Department has a rich history dating back to 1884. The department was created after the merger of two other departments, the West Side Police Department and the East Side Police Department. The new department was named in honor of former Mayor Amos S. Chamberlain and City Councilman Harry Fenton. Saul A. Weinstock is credited with being the first police officer on duty in South Lyon on December 1, 1884. Weinstock served for over 25 years with the South Lyon Police Department until his death in 1931. In 1916, John J. Haggerty became the first African American police officer in Michigan when he joined the South Lyon force as a patrolman. He remained with the department until his retirement in 1951. In 1932, Homer Wernick became the first black member of the South Lyon Police Force when he joined as an assistant patrolman/ homicide detective. He remained with the force until his retirement in 1965. In 1948, Floyd Latham became one of only two black officers on staff when he joined as an investigative sergeant/ criminal investigation unit detective/ traffic enforcement agent/ street work squad trooper/ narcotics unit detective/ information service unit detective (ISU).He remaind withSouthLyonPoliceDepartmentuntilhis Retirementin1982.(the other color was white) In 1966, Clyde Runkle became one of only three African Americans on staff when he joined as an investigatory sergeant(ISU). South Lyon, Michigan is a small city located in west-central Michigan. The population was 2,925 at the2010 census. The city is bordered by Grand Rapids to the east, Flint to the north and west, and Lansing to the south. South Lyon was platted in 1871 as a village named after its founder George Washington Lyon. It became a city in 1925. The area now known as South Lyon was first inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians. In 1824 they were forced out of their land near present-day South Lyon by Ulysses S. Grant during his Expedition of 1824-25. The Potawatomi built their village on the site of what is now North Park in 1886. They were succeeded by the Ottawa tribe who also occupied much of southeast Michigan until 1789 when they were driven out by American settlers led by James Kippenberger Sr.. The Ottawa moved into what is now south Lyons Township on or about November 11, 1830 from an encampment near Gratiot Lakeshore where they had resided for many years before being driven out following a tribal war with neighboring Huron tribe which resulted in loss of life and extensive damage to their property including most of their crops and houses In 1871, George Washington Lyon founded what would become South Lyon as a village named after its founder It became a city on October 20, 1925
There is no one definitive answer to this question, as the history of policeman gift histories can be very different. South Lyon, Michigan is a small town located in the US state of Michigan. The community was founded in 1879 by Polish immigrants as South Lyon, Michigan Cement Works. In 1901, the company moved to new plant in South Lyon Township and changed its name to American Bridge Corporation. In 1945, the company merged with John Deere Company to form John Deere & Co., one of the largest agricultural companies in America. The business expanded into other industries such as transportation and manufacturing after World War II. The population of South Lyon peaked at 10,752 in 1970 but has since fallen by about 1,000 residents over the past few decades due to various factors such as loss of jobs in agriculture and other businesses; a decrease in birth rates; and migration out of the area for employment opportunities elsewhere. However, there are still a number of people living in South Lyon who are associated with its history or who have families that live there. The first settlers were Poles who arrived from Poland around 1879 seeking work on farms west of Detroit. They built homes onsite and started businesses such as farm stores and cements production which helped start what would become known as South Lyon Township. By 1901, American Bridge Corporation had moved to their new plant east of town and renamed it “South Lyons” because that was where they manufactured their products (bridgeyards being one product). In 1945, when John Deere merged with John Casey Company to form JDC plc., many residents left South Lyons for jobs at JDC’s factories throughout the Midwest including Indianapolis (USA), Sheffield (UK), Salford (UK), Wroclaw (Poland) and others across North America. Some remain scattered throughout this small town today while others have relocated outside of Michigan altogether.
South Lyon was a small village in Michigan during the early 1800s. The settlement was located on the south side of the river, about four miles east of what is now South Lyon Township. The first settler in South Lyon was Nicholas Toole, who arrived in 1796. By 1810, there were only two houses in the village. In 1818, John Stephenson moved from Canada to South Lyon and started a tannery. In 1825, Samuel Davenport set up a store in South Lyons. A post office was established at South Lyon in 1830, and by 1840 there were ten residents living there.
