Rochester Hills, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 49,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Mio–Hudson metropolitan area. The history of Rochester Hills can be traced back to 1837 when a group of fur traders founded a trading post on the east side of Grand River near present-day Rochester Hills. In 1848, John Sibley discovered valuable coal seams in what is now eastern Wayne County and began production at his mine called Racine Hill in what is now Rochester Hills. The town's name was first applied to what are now central and north sides of downtown Rochester; these were then known as "the hills". In 1855, construction began on Iron Mountain which became one of America's largest copper mines and led to significant development in the town including an airport (now Metro Airport) and new schools (now Dowling Community Schools). The Mines Department also built factories for aluminum and other materials during this time period. During World War II, many residents worked at military installations such as Fort Dearborn or Mackinac Island Naval Station until their jobs were transferred to war-time economies elsewhere in the country or abroad. Many people who live within walking distance todayof some wartime sites still remember those difficult years - there was no air conditioning yet! Rochester Hills is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Livonia Township. The population was 33,868 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the southeastern edge of Metro Detroit, bordered by Washtenaw County to the north, Oakland County to the east, and Livingston County to the south. It forms a metropolitan area with Troy and other nearby cities which had a combined population of 514,602 as of 2016. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rochester Hills were French traders in 1695-96 when they traveled from Marquette's voyage downriver along present day I-75W searching for an opening into Canada through which trade could be conducted with Asia. They noted an area now bounded by 7 Mile Road (now part of M-12), Grand River Avenue (now US 131), Westmoreland Avenue (now M-1), and Park Road (now I-275) as being "the most fertile country this side ofCanada" and named it Nouvelle France after its new king Louis XIV who had just reigned over France. The area that would become Rochester Hills was rolling forest until 1824 when surveyors discovered gold near what are now White Street and East Boulevard while exploring for land grants in anticipation of developing Michigan's rich mining resources including copper and lead ore on Saginaw Bayou near where modern day Woodward Avenue meets Saginaw Creek today. In 1825, James Laughlin became interested in this potential wealth when he travelled upriver from Detroit on his way to take possession of land grants adjoining Saginaw Bayou which he called New Mexico Territory after finding some interesting deposits there including silver nuggets at Silver Cliff Mine). With prospectors streaming into Michigan from all over America during this period – many coming via Buffalo – Laughlin decided to establish himself as a Mining Company Manager in New Mexico Territory under his own name also becoming known as James Darnall or John Darnall about 1830s hereabouts due largely to his investment success at Silver Cliff Mine together with another early pioneer trader Isaac Huffman & Co.. The two men hired four Indian guides (Cherokee Chief Black Hawk among them)5 who accompanied Laughlin & Company members prospecting forilver near present day Ottawa Heights along Ottawa River before arriving there on July 10th 1827 aboard ship Santa Fe carrying 530 lbs silver worth $2 million cash value! This event helped set off a series Of American exploration/exploitation campaigns led by businessmen like Darnall throughout Upper Great Lakes region starting with Warranted Purchase Act 1785 – Rush’s purchase - leading eventually to their establishment as United States mints producing coins both face value & fractional currency types thru mid 1800s until finally ceded backto Britain following American Revolution ending those operations in 1835
In 1837, the first steamboat left Rochester Hills for Detroit. The town was founded by General John C. Frémont in 1837 as a trading post on the Rouge River. In 1839, the town was renamed Dearborn Heights after President James K. Polk and Mrs. Polk donated land to make the community possible. The population of Dearborn Heights grew rapidly from 553 in 1840 to 2,692 in 1860. The town lost its importance after Michigan became a state in 1846 and Dearborn Heights became part of Lansing Township.
