The National Guard in Oak Park, Michigan has been a part of the community since 1903. The Guard patrolled the streets and highways during the early days of Flint’s development. In 1916, the Michigan State Legislature created the first national guard unit in Oak Park. The unit was called “The 1st Armored Regiment” and served for two years. However, it was soon disbanded due to World War I. In 1923, anotherunit was created when Governor John Brinegar dissolved the County Court branch and ordered all county officials to become members of the National Guard. The unit was called “The 2nd Armored Regiment” and served until 1927 when it too was disbanded due to World War II. However, because of this history, there are many items that remain with the National Guard in Oak Park today. One such item is an American flag that flew over Fort Harrison from 1862-1865 (the first time it ever flew over Flint). Another is a brass cannon that once stood at Jackson Square on Market Street – now used as a playground equipment by local children. A third item is a plaque honoring Captain James Haggerty who commanded Company K (1st Battalion) Oklahoma National Guardsmen during World War II while they were stationed in Japan. This battalion fought at Okinawa and Iwo Jima where they received numerous awards including three Purple Hearts and one Silver Star for bravery under fire. Finally, there is also a monument to Lieutenant Colonel Forrest Epps who commanded Company D (3rd Battalion) Missouri Infantry during World War II near Muskegon Heights outside of Detroit Lakes after he led his unit through many battles including Battle of Stonington Lake which resulted in heavy casualties for his troops A permanent presence of the National Guard in Oak Park began with its activation on October 15th, 1953 when soldiers from Company A (2nd Battalion) Illinois Infantry arrived from Warrensburg Barracks nearby after being mobilized there pursuant to President Dwight D Eisenhower’s Executive Order 8802 which stated that all citizens should be able to render service without fear or punishment if needed within their respective communities or areas subject to military jurisdiction

Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. The population was 44,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. Oak Park has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years and was first settled by Europeans in 1795. The town sprang up around a military post that was established on land donated by General John Brown in 1814. By 1830, Oak Park had become a fashionable Deerfield Township community with white streetcar riders passing through its olive-green streets daily to reach Detroit's downtown district. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson appointed Captain George Haines as commissioner to investigate Indian Affairs within what became known as "The Swamp." Captain Haines discovered that much of what he called "The Swamp" was actually swampy farmland owned by American Indians who had long ago abandoned it because they were unable to grow crops there due to low rainfall and lack of natural resources. He recommended that Congress provide financial assistance to Indian tribes so they could purchase or lease land elsewhere so that they could establish settlements and start new lives as farmers and ranchers rather than remaining permanently refugees on their ancestral lands. This began what would become known as Prairie Settlement time – when many Germans, Irish, Swedes, Dutchmen and other European immigrants set up homes in what is now northwestern Michigan (including parts of Dearborn Heights and Wayne County), farming maize, beans, potatoes and other crops while awaiting congressional permission to settle permanently on American soil. In 1847-48 Captain Haines’ recommendations were followed by Congressional action which funded Green Bay & Michilimackinac Railroad Company effective November 10th, 1847 allowing settlers from Indiana (then part of Ohio) & Illinois (then part of Illinois) - many German Catholics - begin moving westward into Michigan under the banner "The Great Western Migration". Once this railway arrived in remote areas such as Oak Park & River Rouge it made possible for farmers living east of Grand Rapids (& Mackinaw City) to send their goods directly west instead having to take weeklong trips via steamboats across Lake Erie & downriver until they reached Chicago or Milwaukee where they transacted business before continuing their journey home via dark days aboard overcrowded trains called “the Dunes” which stopped at various points along the way including Atchee Springs near Presque Isle beach where passengers disembarked their baggage before wading ankle deep into water up to their waists in order not To loose any valuable property during these dangerous crossings! One passenger wrote about his experience: “I have never seen anything like it before; we passed through dangerous rapids full [of] salt water; I supposed our bundles would be lost if we did not get out safe but we got them all back safe […] We are very happy with our new home hereabouts […] If you cannot find an article about us please write one […] Our people are very good citizens […] No man can do too much for his country’s cause…]” A few months later Congress responded with legislation providing $3 million towards construction of a completed line from Toledo across southern Ontario province (now Marquette County) direct to Buffalo – thus bypassing Toronto – making Oak Park one of the first places outside New York City along this corridor serviceable for commercial pursuits! In 1865 Elmiraqua Township was organized within present day Oakland County following boundary changes ensuing fromthe Battle Of Gettysburg when Union forces defeated Confederate troops under General Robert E Lee north ofoak park
Oak Park was founded in 1836 by John and Anna Kirkpatrick as a township of Wayne County, Michigan. It became a city in 1868.
