Mount Pleasant is a small town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is located on the south side of Peninsula Road, between I-75 and US-27. The first Europeans to visit Mount Pleasant were French traders in 1696. A post office was established in 1701, and by 1712 there were three houses in the town. By 1800, Mount Pleasant had a schoolhouse and two stores. In 1806, a mill was built and operated until 1840s when it was destroyed by fire. In 1831, George Washington Carver arrived in Mount Pleasant with his family from Tuskegee Institute for his agricultural experimentations near Atlanta (now Alabama). He started a grocery store here and developed an orchard that produces apples for regional markets such as Detroit and Cleveland. After his death in 1961, his widow continued operations of Carver Orchard until her death in 1984; thereafter it was managed by their children and grandchildren over the years. During World War II service members from Mountpleasant formed "Gentlemen's Clubs" to help shoplift supplies from local retailers while they were away on military duty; these groups are still remembered today as something of an unofficial community institution. In 1948, four students at Grand Valley State University founded the first student newspaper at Michigan colleges—the "Mount Pleasant Gazette". That same year saw the opening of MtPleasant Elementary School which serves students grades K-5th grade along with public library access through its front yard; this then became home to what is now called Lakeshore Middle School after that school moved into its current building across MLK Boulevard west of downtownriverside high schools during 2006/2007 school year According to The 2010 U .S . Mount Pleasant is a small town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, located on the eastern border of the city of Detroit. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It has been called "The Friendly Village" since it was first settled by Germans in 1829. The community was named for Mount Pleasant Township, in which it was originally located. The township had been created in 1821 and included present-day Mount Pleasant and parts of what are now east Lansing and west Dearborn Heights. In 1831, when Detroit became a municipality, Mount Pleasant Township joined with other townships to form the new municipality of Washtenaw County. At that time, Mount Pleasant Township consisted of just a few homes and businesses near present-day Eastern Market Square in downtown Detroit. As Washtenaw County grew larger, so too did its need for labor to maintain its infrastructure and support its residents. And so it was that early settlers began arriving in Mount Pleasant from all over Michigan to take advantage of the opportunities offered here. By 1840, there were more than 100 German immigrants living in Mountpleasant – many working as farmers or mechanics while others built homes or started businesses aspects such as breweries or grocery stores. As this community grew closer to downtown Detroit – which would soon become an important commercial center for the region – German immigrants increasingly took up residence on Woodward Avenue between Cass Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard (now Clarendon Street). This area today is known as German Village because many families who lived there still reside there today. In 1870, when Washtenaw County merged with Wayne County to form Michigan’s largest county*, many Germans decided to move back into their old homeland after years living outside ofMichigan due to political conditions in Germany following World War I*. They moved into what is now Mt Pleasant* where they found fertile land and affordable prices for housing*]. Many churches also sprouted up around this time including Evangelical Lutheran (Elders) Church on Cass Avenue*, St John’s Lutheran on Monroe Street (later renamed Luther Road), Catholic Apostolic Church on Macklin Street† (*all original structures have since disappeared*)], Congregationalist (Congregational) Church at 7th & Union Streets††(*recently demolished), United Methodist Church at 7th & Clairmount streets††(*recently demolished), Presbyterian Dutch Reformed Church at 8th & Seward Streets††(*recently demolished*)], First Baptist church at 9th & Vine Street*, Jewish National Temple *(new structure opened c1895)*}, African American Baptist church *(opened 1902*)}, Methodists Episcopal church *(opened 1909*)}. However despite these Churches being established relatively recently*, much activity still took place within these walls during those early days served by friendly locals.* One can find artifacts evidence from earlier days like farm tools left behind or even pioneer deeds from earlier settler families that have yet to be discovered.*
In 1871, Mount Pleasant was organized as a village. The first post office was established in Mount Pleasant on July 1, 1871. On November 16 of that year, the name of the village was changed to Lansing after the then-governor of Michigan, James K. Lansing. In 1881, Mount Pleasant had a population of 145 and a school district with six schools. On May 15, 1911, the village became an incorporated city when it passed an act incorporating all villages in Washtenaw County except Lansing and Woodstock which had already been incorporation as cities by statute. In 1916, Lansing annexed part of eastern Mt. Pleasant and formed the new town of East Lansing with a population of 507 residents. Lansing's annexation led to increased development in east Lansing and its adjacent neighborhoods such as Livingston Heights and Windsor Hills which were until then undeveloped areas within the limits of Mount Pleasant. In 1927, Eastern Michigan University began operations in downtown Lansing with several buildings from what is now the Masterpiece Ballroom complex being built at a cost of $8 million dollars including one for use as an academic building and another for athletics purposes. This led to even larger development in east Lansing over time with many new businesses opening up along West State Street between Woodward Avenue and Seneca Road becoming known as "The Strip". In 1938 when Detroit's population peaked at 2 million people there were only 853 residents living in east Lansing making it one-tenth the size compared to Detroit's metropolitan area at over 10 million people during this time period. However since then east Lansing has grown significantly while Detroit has decreased significantly due primarily to demographic changes such as immigration which have largely replaced workforce growth in eastern Michigan with non-industrialized rural populations whileDetroit has seen suburban growtholiath apartment developments rise up around it through gaming casinos etc.).
