During this time, Midland also became known as the “Gun Runner’s town†because so many residents bought and used firearms interchangeably. The second major period of gun ownership happened during World War II. After America entered the war, demand for handguns skyrocketed due to concerns about Nazi Germany attacking America alone. In order to meet this demand, dealers across Michigan started selling weapons online and through mail order. This allowed civilians throughout Michigan to purchase firearms without going through licensed dealers. Additionally, during this time new laws were passed limiting access to handgun ammo - which likely contributed to increased sales of assault rifles and other large-capacity pistols. Today, Midlanders continue to be ardent gun owners - evidenced by the number of firearm retailers present in townspeople across all demographics (ages 15-54). Additionally, there has been an overall trend towards larger calibers over small caliber pistols over recent years; meaning that most citizens now own both long guns and handguns – making it one of the most welcoming communities for concealed carry permit holders in Michigan!

However, since 1990 Midland has seen an increase in business activity as a bedroom community for metropolitan Detroit areas such as Detroit-Lanham or Lansing-East Lansing. The economy of Midland is primarily based on agriculture with a significant contribution from construction services and retail trade including local businesses that provide goods for consumption by local residents and businesses within East Lansing orDetroit-Lanham

Midland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Midland County. The population was 97,853 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan after Detroit and Flint. Midland is also the largest city east of Lake Huron. The first permanent settler in what is now Midland was Nicholas Hensley, who arrived on July 11, 1837, with his family from Boston, Massachusetts. The town was named for John Saginaw River which flows through central Michigan and forms the border between Ottawa County and Grand Traverse County. In 1848, Stephen Alder founded an ammunition store in what is now Midland to provide goods to settlers along the Buffalo Road (now US–12). A devastating fire destroyed most of Alder's store in 1850 but he rebuilt it and continued to sell ammunition until his death in 1865. In 1854, Captain Nathaniel Prentice built a sawmill along Buffalo Road near modern day downtown Midland. The first school in what is now Midland was organized as a district high school on November 1, 1856 by act of Congress under the name "East Lansing High School". It replaced an earlier high school that had been closed due to financial difficulties caused bythe Panic of 1857. On October 30th 1870 voters passed an ordinance creating a new municipality called "Midtown" which included all present-day Midland Township as well as part of unincorporated Mackinac County north of City Park Avenue - this area would become known as Old Town or Downtown Midtown today! This act created municipal boundaries for what are now Washtenaw Township (north), Oakland County (east), Macomb County (south) and Darien Township (west). In 1888 there were over 350 residents living within Municipal limits when incorporation came into effect! It should be noted that despite being incorporated into a new municipality only 12 years previously - much like other newly formed cities during this time period - control over Main Street declined from Municipal Control back to Township/County control starting around 1916 until finally reverting back to Municipality hands following World War II! Some interesting early history includes: The first electric streetcar running between downtown Chicago and East Lansing opened service on May 10th 1906; State representative George Edward Smith made headlines when he successfully ran for office without any money but managed to win thanks largely to support from workers at his local munitions factory; James Mapes became Territory Superintendent for Territorial District No.(7) including portions of Upper Peninsula including present day Cadillac & Mackinac Counties; Congregational services were offered freeof charge by Reverend Wm Ehrhart until 1861 when taxes began levying; David Cone served one term as Mayor beginning on January 1st 1886 before losing election becoming Sheriff effective February 14th 1886; Hooper Brady succeeded him becoming 3rd Mayor beginning on April 15th 1890s ending with his death two months later at age 44 just days shy of 5 years old! One can only imagine how life would have been different if such amazing mayors had not died young...or maybe they did? Anyway...much more about future mayor's later lives below! After five years without any leadership or plan put together by either side - due primarily to lacklustre finances brought about largely byapperxing expenditures associated with WWI & WWII respectively - things began looking up for both sides circa 1916 when township supervisor Hooper Brady stepped down citing health reasons suddenly leaving open the possibility another challenger could be elected instead...and so it proved! oliver harrison won election resulting in large decrease in spending therein comparedto previous Supervisor's tenure!!! By 1920 however deficits had again become too much forController Harrison so he reverted back fully back into Borough/Municipality status......This situation changed however significantly upon controllership passing away from Harry Sawyer Jr., son Of controller Harry Sawyer Sr., who took overController function December 1st 1925 thru May 31st 1926 during Which time no major budget changes occurred..... Upon Controller Harry Sawyer Jr.'s departure various important decisions were made regarding fund allocation withinTownship&Canton government including approvalof LONG TERM PLAN OF OPERATIONS dated March 13th 1927 which provided FOR REDUCTION IN SPENDING ON SCHOOLS BY 2%. By 1933 budget appropriations had once again shrunk reducing funding even further yet still providing necessarysupport functions!! However public outcry led To controller William Geddes taking office August 15TH 1933 increasing monies available TO FUND SCHOOLS BY 25%!!! With Controller Geddes' arrival everything started moving forward gradually getting closer towards adequacy!! After almost 50 years midlanders have finally achieved their long desired goal+?!? During controller William Geddes' time there were numerous fateful moments such as: First interurban bus service connecting downtown With eastern suburbs starting operations November 16TH 1937; Second Cold War setting off World War II Aug 4th 1941 w/ Invasion Of Europe Oct 8TH 1945 finalizing borders between US states & MIeland thus greatly expanding township jurisdiction); Third Intermediate Day Parade taking place June 6TH 1939 marking official end Of Prohibition era....... Finally post war prosperity grew steadily while tax rates remained low culminatingIn 1959 with establishmentOf Local Authority Government allowing Taxation authority To Be lodged witH Village Council directly w/Minority White Citizens
