Midland, Michigan is a small town in the northwestern corner of Michigan, United States. The population was 3,598 at the 2010 census. Midland is part of the Grand Rapids–Emmons metropolitan area. The name "Midland" is derived from English meaning "halfway." The first post office in Midland was established on July 15, 1836, by Amos Dean and others. The town became a village on December 12, 1859. On February 14, 1865, it became a city with a population of 2500 people. In 1907 Midland lost its charter as a city because it failed to make annual payments to the state government which amounted to $100 per capita. The Great Lakes Shipbuilding Company built four submarines for the US Navy at Midland between 1912 and 1914; these submarines are now on display at MHSC's shop in downtown Midland. Midland, Michigan is a small town in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The community was founded by David Haines in 1824 and was named for Midland County, Kansas. It became a state capital in 1867 and has remained an important cultural center throughout its history. The oldest buildings in Midland date back to 1824 when David Haines moved to the area from Kansas. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Muskegon River and started trading with other Indians. In 1829, he married Rachel Ortega, daughter of José de la Costa y Ortega, who had come to live in what is now Midland during the Mexican-American War. Together they founded what is now Midland's first shop, which traded goods with surrounding villages and counties. In 1834, David Haines sold his land near downtown to James Fenton for $10 per acre. This purchase made Midland one of the most valuable towns in Michigan because it allowed for easy access to both trade with other states and settle new territory that would be added to Michigan following Indian removal policies under President Andrew Jackson administration.
