The Escanaba Air Force Base is one of the most important military installations in Michigan. It was established in 1943, and has been a major center for airpower activity ever since. The base has a number of facilities that are used by the Air Force, as well as other branches of the military. One of the most unique features of Escanaba Air Force Base is its gift history. It was here that C-47 Skytrain donors arrived for Christmas in 1947. This event helped to create a close relationship between the Air Force and Santa Claus, and it remains an important part of Escanaba AFB's history. In 1960, President John F Kennedy visited Escanaba AFB and presented General Curtis LeMay with a gift from America's newly formed space program. This donation represented an significant milestone in Space History, and it helped to solidify LeMay's role as one of America's leading experts on space exploration. In 1969, President Nixon presented General James E Haldeman with a gift from America's new secret government organization – within weeks of his inauguration! This gift represented another significant milestone in American espionage history – Haldeman became head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Today, Escanaba Air Force Base is home to many different types of aircrafts which provide service across all sectors of our defense community. The Escanaba Air Force Base (EAFB) was the original United StatesAAF station in Michigan. It opened on 1 October 1941 and became part of the Ninth Air Force. On 15 May 1945, it was transferred to the Eighth Air Forces and became known as Escanaba AAF. Inactivated on 1 September 1946, it re-opened on 2 October 1951 as an airbase for the Strategic Defense Command's MXAD/9 interceptor Wing. The wing disbanded in 1960 and the base reverted to its original name on 1 January 1961 when EAFB became part of Tactical Air Command's 9th Bombardment Wing under Major General Robert H. "Bob" Wallace. The wing briefly activated from here again during Operation Neptune's Spear in 1991 before being inactivated again effective 31 December 1992 when all strategic bombers were withdrawn from Michigan due to budgetary cuts.

Escanaba is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 20 miles north of Lansing on the lower Peninsula of the State of Michigan. The population was 2,683 at the 2000 census and 2,812 as of 2010. It is part of the Muskegon-Wixom metropolitan area. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Escanaba were French traders and missionaries in 1795. They named it "Escanaba" after a local waterfall which they found while exploring the area. The community began to grow rapidly during World War II as many Soldiers from nearby Lansing fought in Europe. After the war ended, many new residents came into town and businesses were established including a cotton gin, bakery, gas station, and automotive parts store before it went out of business in the 1970s. In recent years there has been an effort spearheaded by local leaders to revive growth with help from private industry and philanthropy as well as some new development initiatives such as a new high school campus that opened in 2011 and a brewery called Arbor Brewing Company that opened in 2013. Escanaba's rich history dates back to when European traders first arrived in what is now Escanaba Township (now Muskegon-Wixom) around 1795 under the name Escanaban meaning falls or streamlet near by (the current name reflects its location). This community quickly grew due to soldiers stationed nearby during World War II who brought their families with them; today more than 50% of escananabans are descendants of these early settlers. In 1946escanaba was formally designated as an independent city by then Governor John Engler with incorporation becoming effective October 1st following passage by both houses of the Legislature. In 1978 voters approved giving city status again through referendum even though this time charter amendments required approval from both chambers - this proved successful according to Mayor Harry Lusk who said "It shows our democracy works."
