The history of shooters in Bay City, Michigan goes back to 1892. Rifleman James A. Brown and shotgunsner William C. Crouse founded the first shooting society in Bay City, Michigan. The society met at the old Masonic Temple on Second Street and shot matches from their rifle range there until 1893. In 1896, the society moved to a new building at Third and Washington Streets and continued to shoot matches there until 1898. From then until 1912, the society held its annual convention at the Depot Ballroom on Grand Avenue in Bay City. There they fired shotguns from a 100-yard range using pistol grips that emerged from old cannons used by ship captains during naval battles centuries earlier. From 1912 until 1916, they held their convention at the State Fairgrounds on Ionia Avenue inBay City before moving again to their current location at Fourth and Washington Streets in 1916. The society has held its annual meeting every year since then except for one year when it was hosted by another organization due to World War I (1914-1918). Bay City is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Bay County. The population was 5,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Bay City were several Potawatomi people who settled there in 1814. The first white person to live in Bay City was John Sibley, who arrived with his family from Wisconsin in 1827. Sibley had been a settler in what is now Ottawa County, Illinois. He built a cabin on the site of present-day downtown Bay City and named it after himself and his home town of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The first post office in Bay City was established on July 3, 1830, under the name "Winchester". In 1837, James Fenton established a fur trading post at what is now called Fenton's Landing on Muskegon River east of downtown BayCity; this became the nucleus for Fenton's business operations which continued until 1865 when he sold all his land east of Grand Rapids to become one of the largest landowners in Michigan history. In 1853–54, Joseph Lansing opened an academy at what is now North Park Square off Third Street; Lansing later served as its first president and donated most of its building to become Stonington Hall University near where it stands today. By 1860, most residents in Bay City had moved away because farming no longer offered a living wage or enough acreage to support them and because freight rates were too high for wagon transportation overland across rural Michigan farms due to natural obstacles such as rivers and mountain ranges that prevented wagon traffic from crossing unimpeded except by Native Americans using their boats for passage across these distances during traditional seasonally raiding patterns).
