Bay City, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kent County and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Bay City was founded in 1834 by Danish immigrants who named it "Bayside". It became a town in 1851 and then a city in 1898. The current name commemorates General John Pemberton, who fought with distinction during the American Civil War onetime as commander of the Fort Pitt Expedition against Native Americans in what is now southwestern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania. The first settler to come to Bay City was Rasmus Rasmussen, who arrived on July 16, 1834, from Viborg am Südkanal (now Vejle Municipality) on Lolland Fjord Inlet on board the ship "Olivia" under captain Jens Nielsen and his family. He built a cabin near present-day downtown BayCity on land that he had bought along with other refugees from Louisiana during the 1830s following Tecumseh's Rebellion (1812-1815). In 1835, Rasmus' son Ole Rasmussen started farming there also and soon became known for his fine produce, which was stored near downtown until prices rose too high for storage or sale outside town limits. By 1840, most of what is now Downtown BayCity had been built including Rasmus' house and barn where many early bay city residents lived before moving out into more spacious dwellings around 1853 when Burton Road between Main Street and Hastings Avenue were opened up as an arterial street linking downtown withoutland areas eastwardly extending into villagelimits
