During World War II, the Coast Guard became a part of the United States Armed Forces and played an important role in Pacific Theater of War. The Coast Guard also provides humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, participates in military exercises with other countries, conducts Search and Rescue operations, responds to calls for service from citizens, businesses, and other organizations around the world. Today, the Coast Guard continues its tradition of providing quality service to all who rely on it for their safety. Gaithersburg is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. Gaithersburg was founded in 1788 and was the first capital of Maryland. It is located on the Potomac River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Washington D.C., and includes the neighborhoods of Gaithersburg Heights and Gaithersburg Town Center. The population was 54,752 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Gaithersburg was James Hardship who purchased land from the Lenape Native Americans in 1686. He named his new home "Gaithersburg" after himself and his father-in-law Colonel John Gaither, a soldier from England who had served under King Charles II during the American Revolution. In 1792, when Prince George's County was created from parts of Maryland, Gaithersburg became its first capital. Thefounded an academy where he taught mathematics and philosophy to young women until 1828; it later became known as George Washington University. In 1834, General Andrew Johnson ordered all U.S military forces to move out of Baltimore because he thought Governor Martin Mifflin had been too cozy with then-Mayor Moses Harris; however, they stayed behind to defend Baltimore while Mifflin went into exile in Virginia Beach. In 1849–50 President James Kahl appointed Judge Augustus Mason Webb as commissioner for education within Prince George's County; he organized a school board which built what is now Bowie High School on North Avenue in 1853–54 and court houses between 1850 and 1865 inside Griggs Hall on Fourth Street (now Eastern Boulevard). In 1861–62 Congress passed an act providing for selection of delegates to a state constitutional convention that would draft a new Maryland Constitution; among these delegates were Representative Augustus Mason Webb (who represented District 9 including present-day Gaitherburg Township) and Congressman Lewis Cass (from District 2 including Laurel). This action set off years of turmoil over slavery as party members debated whether free people or slaveholders should control government facilities like schools and churches – ultimately leading to secession during the American Civil War On July 1st 1860 Alfred Thayer Mahan wrote: "We are arrived at one point - this I know - [that] if we can keep our country together by working together we can do anything." On October 15th 1860 Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order allowing all slaves in neighboring states freed without leaving their families behind—a major victory for abolitionism across America The townsite aroundpresent dayGriggsHallwas platted out by Captain John Smith Sr., owner of nearby Salisbury Court House which served as both courthouse and barracks for local militia during wartime .
